Nah. RROD is multiple things. It isn't one thing or the other. An error explaining exactly what happened will show up.

Most of the time its hardware failure which has to be replaced, wrapping your shit and heating up your xbox is only going to do damage to it, not fix it.

I've had my ps3 for years without any issues whatsoever, and my roommate's Wii is the same. I never hear anyone bitching about their broken ps3 or Wii either; it's only 360 that I hear anyone complain about :shrug:

I've had friends who have gotten YLOD on there ps3's more then one once.

I have owned my 360 for two years without any problems and a friend of mine had his for 5 years without any issues.
I also clean my 360 every 3 months or so.

I think it all comes down to how well they are taken care of.

That's retarded, you can't just link the wiki of planned obsolescence and use that to validate the claim that something falls into that category.

The latest video game console generation was in fact designed to be the specific opposite of that because they make money selling the software so the longer the hardware remains relevant the more money they make. That claim belies a basic misunderstanding of the marketing involved in the business model.

You probably think new video games should cost $60 always, too.

The red ring is caused by the thermal paste between the microprocessor and the heat sink becoming dried up and cracking, thus it doesn't transfer heat and the system shuts down before it overheats. Then it won't let you restart it until you fix it and do a hard reboot.  You can buy the replacement paste for like $15 at RadioShack, it's called arctic silver.  There's a YouTube video that shows how to do it.
