I absolutely love graffiti. In my opinion it's some of the best art in the world

Just like you I really dislike the meaningless graffiti but I do love the graffiti with a message, especially when it's well done. All over my college town there are murals which aren't the same as graffiti I suppose because they're legal but I still love walls covered with art. I can't fathom why in the world anyone would rather see a blank wall that's likely dirty or at the very least bland.

appropriate places isare not always a must for me to appreciate but I really
dislike just seeing someone write their name a bunch of times in a fashion
that leaves it impossible for me to even make out. edit-i mean like marker
tags. Boring even though I know it took you awhile to get it down.

I love the culture though. Pretty strange internal contradiction.

It's hard to find art where money isn't a motive, and that's what makes graffiti
so great in my opinion.

down here we have an event called art basel, I believe this only happens here, in NY, and somewhere in Europe where it started. Sometimes the event is kind of shitty but in December 2010 we had a fucking AWESOME art basel, there were literally over 200 graffiti artists and the art district down here was COVERED in murals, I mean there must have been over 1000 pieces on over 200 different building walls. It was fucking incredible, 3 days of this, people playing music in the street, smoking pot, drinking, the gallery that at the time was owned by my friend before it went under was more of a warehouse then a gallery, the front was covered, the back wall must have been over 4000 square feet. There was more art then I'd ever seen. It was probably the coolest single event I've ever been to, it was more like marti gras, and I realised over about 20 of my friends were affiliated with graffiti crews which was strange I didn't know this.

I think that shit is awesome. Plus I have two other friends that did an empty bomb shelter down here with murals for like two years or something. What I think is wack are taggers and wack crews that only tag their name or do a wack mural of their name to cover someone elses mural. That shit is wack, and there is a name for those people, toys. Tags are just ugly. But murals of characters and putting their name next to it in 80s style lettering is fucking gorgeous. I think the graffiti style has been used up a bit, but the concept is fucking incredible. Wall murals are incredible. And photo realistic ones are incredible. Writing your name up though on the side of someone's shop like "urrrgggghhhh... gtk gangs that kill urrrgggh" is fucking wack. I hate that shit. But this is cool:

And I mean that's nothing. One or two of those are kind of wack. But I'm just giving you the general impression I get. I don't have time to look for 1000 murals and what not. I have like 100 murals saved in photos that my friends have done, but don't feel like uploading them all.

Next question: ask "what do you think of beer drinking punk rock bands? They hurt the community or it's great music?" :smirk:

actually some graffiti artists make bank as muralists, and make their name thru illegally tagging.  its pretty much like anything else, all art has some sort of street-spirit to it but graffiti is just very closely tied with the streets.  and yeah usually graffiti artists dont expect to get paid from that

what is your crews tag? I knew a few down here, dtk was one. But the time I knew dtk was YEARS ago I have NO idea what they do now. They're life was tagging walls so I assume they still do that. I wouldn't have a clue to be honest.

yeah of course. People make shit money as artists either in a gallery or on a wall. I've never known any artist that didn't have a second job. NEVER. Van Gogh even was poor during his time, he was worth millions like centuries after his death

I LOVE graffiti, of all kinds from murals to tags.
I used to write a bit many years ago. last time I picked a can I had lost all my can control :frown:
I'm back to sketching now and plan to restart doing legal walls next summer.
