Serotonin, Mushrooms, the Mind, and Bad Trips
    #17000124 -

So I just had a question about the materialist philosophy of the mind and how it relates to bad mushroom trips. If the general idea is that our behavioral states can be explained purely by physical chemical interactions in the brain then what are the implications of a mushroom trip going bad? From my I understanding mushrooms most likely act on the serotonin pathway increasing the overall level of serotonin effecting the synapses, thus causing the trip.

So my question is, if all that behavioral states are is chemicals in the brain, then how would an increase in serotonin in the brain induced by psilocybin go from a good chemically introduced trip to a bad one? Unless of course a bad trip is induced pharmacologically and something shifts in the serotonin pathway thus causing the onset of the bad trip. In other words, if it is just chemicals causing behavior then why would an increase in serotonin cause good trips in some, and bad trips in others? Or even a good trip on the come-up transitioning into a bad trip at the peak.

Sorry if this question is not structured well, I am not much of a philosopher or chemist.

Lots of factors are in play, the person own chemistry will have an impact on how the drug effects them, they might not have a very balanced neurochemical situation going on in their brain.

MDMA is supposed to be euphoric and happy etc, but that didn't stop me from nearly having a panic while on it, shit was so intense and I could handle it. Just because the drug is said to cause "euphoria" doesn't necessarily mean it can't be a difficult time.

From what most people have told me, acid is supposed to be a "happier" trip than shrooms and acid fucks with serotonin more from my knowledge but there can still be "bad" trips. I don't think serotonin means "good" all the time, that's not something I know, an assumption I guess but seems to make sense.

Fuck, who knows, the brain, how does it even work?

I am not going to debate this with you, but I despair when people experienced with psychedelics cling to the 'brain produces consciousness' BS worldview. So all I can do is point you to this great article and video talk (and other stuff) and then it's up to you if you read watch listen feel it and absorb it or not---hopefully you will & it might shake you out of the traditional habit of physicalist-thinking which is hardly harmless and is threatening the very biosphere all live needs to live:

Physicalism: A Pernicious Cosmology

What's invisible? More than you think - John Lloyd

#Edit: I just need to mention this synchronicity. Straight after posting the above mention where I mention about the physicalist paradigm threatening the "Biosphere" I then went to one of the links above, and to its DMT reports and checked out the one I hadn't read yet, but did, and it said:
Quote:
Report #98

I inhaled ONE toke of DMT (about 25mg), and was immediately catapulted into another dimension. I did not see any elves or anything, it seemed to me that I had shot straight into the depths of the DMT experience without having to be introduced to them. Now, I am not a religious person at all, but I found myself (or what I had become rather) in what I can only describe as "The Temple of Life". I was in a sort of white dome, with jewelled walls, covered with liquid diamonds. I felt overcome by an enormous sense of maternal love. I think it was coming from my girlfriend. Confusion set in and I started to question the validity of all this. I could not recall how I had gotten there, or what I really was. In fact, when I opened my eyes, reality was utterly transformed, beyond all my powers of description. "Biosphere" is the word that comes to mind. My girlfriend looked like a machine-goddess, her face glowing with iridescent patterns of symmetrical color. I kept looking out the window, as the scene out there was not as I knew it to be. In fact the landscape was so completely alien that I couldn't except it and kept saying, "This can't be real". It was NOT 'psychedelic', this was something VERY, VERY different.

It mentions the word 'Biosphere'. LOL

I don't think that consciousness and the mind are all chemicals. I was trying to present bad trips and good trips both being the result of mushrooms acting on the same brain pathway as evidence that behavior and the mind are more then just the chemicals in the brain. Basically trying to say that it cannot just be chemicals if serotonin increase could be a cause of both good and bad trips. Not very well developed I know, but like I said I am no philosopher.

Well it's like a little alcohol with dinner can make you feel mellow and good and actually maybe even live longer.  A lot of alcohol all at once can kill you.

Same with the shrooms other than you only think you are going to die thank goodness.

the mushroom digestion process is uneven
so
you have a fluctuating stimulus for serotonin buildup in the brain.

when build up occurs you get longer and longer signal fading.

the signals are from sensation and from memory.

if you can keep on relaxing, and are in reasonable health, then it can be quite interesting to observe and to occasionally trip out sideways into the deeply layered results of more slowly fading sensations and memories.

if you tense up that will also continue longer.

no bullshit.

Often I will get what someone means, and then remember reading someone offer an answer to that kind of question and then forget where I read it LOL
So I will just have to stand alone and try and offer up what I thought was said. Take love-----love very may well alter chemicals in the nervous system. But the BIG mistake that physicalists make from this is then to assume that love can be reduced to this chemical patterning. For what ever love feels like cannot be explained

Same with other emotions like sadness. This culture will reduce it to chemicals, and often--if very sad--label it a biological disease where they say there is "chemical imbalance" and then throw drugs at it. But IS that understanding these feelings or just trying to suppress them. I believe the latter

So your example is a good one on second reading. There is something else going on than simply chemicals.
