Nikon Coolpix or Canon SD series? I need a camera!
    #16470523 -

Season is closing in on me, and I need, at last, to get myself a camera.

I generally suck at taking pictures, but I can't live as a member of this
forum and not be able to sufficiently document my beloved hobby.

(I'm re-reading the photo-tip thread a couple of times a day now...)

Not a wealthy man, so I need something decent to begin with.

I'm looking at Canon and Nikon, as mentioned. Price range is 1000 - 1500
Norwegian Kroner, or roughly USD 150 - 200. I have tried to read reviews
but to be honest they very often don't give me the best clues regarding the
objects I want to photograph.

I'd be grateful for any words on this subject.

Thanks.

:sunny:

I have heard good things about Canon's sx130-IS for macro photography which should be in that price range (especially used/refurbished!). I've also heard the sd4000 takes solid shots and would be even cheaper at this point. Then again, I have also heard the opposite  Try to do a good deal of research on which camera to buy, then after at least several days of intensive study you can forget all of it and go with your gut. Taking good mushroom photos is mostly about keeping the camera as still as possible and getting enough light (either natural light or via flash) through the lens to ensure good detail. If at all possible test drive a few models and see which you like best.

Thanks a lot for your input.

My plan is to gather as much info as possible, so that I can just walk
straight into a shop and pick it up. I cannot stand discussing with the
personell, and really hate when they start trying to coach me into buying
some other product, flashing all sorts of features that I'm not interested in.

Anyway, I have a gut feeling for Canon, I don't really know why.

I really like Olympus' Tough cameras. Used them at work where they took a serious beating underwater, in mud, bouncing off boat decks and rocks, etc. That's the camera I used for years before getting my new one in February. They have macro and supermacro modes and take solid shots. One of the benefits of a compact camera over a big ol' dslr is that your depth of field is usually pretty good on macro shots.

Will perhaps be checking the Olympus TG-620 which is sort of within
price range (I'll have to skip a couple of beers to afford it), if it is fairly
water resistant that obviously helps a lot as I live in what is called the
"Seattle of Norway" indicating it rains a lot here. Especially in season,
of course.

Edit: Just read a review of TG-620 (in Norwegian) realizing the
person who wrote it probably hardly knows what product is being
described.
