in case you have never seen this epic Street Fighter 3 moment... * 1
    #16365815 -

from EVO (2004 I believe)

also, for those that don't know, Street Fighter 3 has a Parry system, in which you can forfeit the safety of blocking by tapping forward at just the right instant to cancel out the opponent's attack

notice the health of each player

I don't get it. The people yelling "WOMBO COMBO" sure sound hype. If it is some great comeback victory, I'm sure it's awesome in it's own way...but  I don't really get it, maybe my video player just doesn't run smoothly enough

There is no need to try and upstage the video I posted... I was just posting it for anyone who might enjoy it and has never seen it

but it really does take some skill to parry, especially chun-li's multi-kick super move, and it's pretty epic to have been done in a tournament setting with 1 hit left in the final round, before there was a trial mode with which to practice pulling it off

which to me is somehow more impressive than, say, some insane 126 hit touch-of-death combo in UMvC3 that requires the type of practice a classical piece of music does...but there are some pretty insane ones

People can still enjoy your video, I didn't make it go away by any means. It just wasn't that exciting to me because with all Capcom fighters whoever gets someone against a wall first usually wins. Compared to SSBM where the game involves a lot of micro and thinking ahead of time a lot more while executing moves with precision.

I'm an avid fighter player and enjoy playing competitively in tournaments so I'm biased against what I feel aren't that good of fighters (90% of the vs series as well as just about every street fighter). Yes the guy parried chun-li and won it with minimal health but the only reason he won in the first place is because of cheese tactics.

The players in my video are some of the top players in super smash and it was an amazing tournament already with an insane combo to end it. http://super-smash-bros.wikia.com/wiki/Wombo_Combo I've met all of these players so that's why I enjoy it more.

I agree with what you said about Capcom fighters, with the exception of Street Fighter 3. Parrying is one of the least cheesy tactics that has ever been incorporated into a fighting game and it's a shame that they only used it in Street Fighter 3, and dropped it because they felt it was too advanced and scared away the average folk.

You take the risk of sacrificing an easy block (holding backwards) by tapping forward...maybe it's easier with an arcade stick, but IME parrying is one of the more difficult things to master I've ever encountered in a fighting game, and requires precision. You can tap forward in an attempt to parry but if you don't tap it at just the right moment, you get hit.

I am also an avid fighting game fan and have been pretty disappointed with a lot of fighting games, where many of them are won by cheese tactics and exploits...but SF3's parry system is simply about skillful timing, not cheese

The parry system isn't cheese by any means, I'd agree with that any day. That was probably the last good street fighter game honestly. The only issue I've ever had comes down to the wall factor, that's why I enjoy fighters with more than one dimension.

The main fighters I try to play professionally (Super Smash and the Naruto Clash of Ninja series) both have a select few playable characters that have a parry built into their kit. I'm one of those guys who spends way too much time playing video games so using counters like that isn't a huge deal for me but getting off of those fucking walls was always my issue.

I still play Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars a lot and it's one of the only Vs series I can get into because of the ability to pick people who can't get wall fucked all game, mainly Zero from the Megaman series.

I had no intention of overshadowing your original post I just feel so meh towards anything street fighter or vs.

lol...in UMvC3, Zero is top-tier... why? because just about any of his standing NORMAL attacks can start a combo that carries you to the wall where he can start his lightning loop. That game could be sooo insanely epic if it weren't for a few glaring balance issues and cheesy near-infinite combos.

The extended combos are part of what makes the game epic, but with the damage being so high, it just ruins it. At high level play, the game mostly boils down to who can get the first hit. I'll maybe make another thread to elaborate more...suffice it to say I wanted to be an UMvC3 tournament player until I realized winning has less to do with skill and more to do with practicing cheese

but I feel you, and it looks like we're really not too far apart on how we feel about things.  I guess I'm a die-hard SF/2d fan at heart, it's what I grew up on. I'm pretty much prepared to boycott cashcom based on a variety of factors, but...  Although I'm way late to the SF3 tournament-level scene, it may be my last hope for SF. I really like the parry system and compared to other Capcom games, skillful reaction time and sensibility might actually be a major winning factor...I'll have to dig into it a lot more before I know for sure, but either way I still love that video I posted

my Smash Bros. experience i guess has been tainted by my friend cheesing the hell out of me with Fox, but I don't think we ever really played with all items disabled like it usually is at tournaments

I do greatly enjoy Smash Bros, but could you recommend a more "traditional" 2d or 3d fighter that I might be missing out on? I'm basically just looking for one that isn't "broken." (I still have hope for SF3, but I would also hope that there's something more recent that isn't ruined by cheese and exploits)

Also, that video you posted... my computer runs video pretty choppy, and I can't seem to understand what is happening. I'm not trying to take away from it's glory, I'd just like an explanation. What I mostly see is one player getting gangraped by 2 opponents...I feel like I'm missing something. What exactly is a wombo combo? lol

Haha, the wombo combo is a set of moves listed on that wikipedia. Basically though in game 3 it came down to a 1v2 which at that level of skill play is still a winnable feet if you can kite the opponents around enough to build up their damage percent to smash them off screen. You can also ledge guard after hitting them off of the fighting platforms by holding onto the ledge yourself forcing them to simply fall because only one person can hang from the sides at a time.

The glory of it though is after he respawned and only managed one single basic attack they caught him in a chain grab of combos and attacks which takes an immense amount of coordination to pull off and killed him from 0% at the start of the combo to a smash that sent him flying clear off the screen with no chance of survival in a matter of moments which would normally take about a minute + of poking and trading blows to accomplish.

It was basically an ultimate fuck you to the other players and an amazing shut down.

As far as Tatsunoko vs Capcom on the Wii goes with online play usually being less than favorable due to the Wii's primary connection being wireless the online play is usually a bit on the laggy side but definitely bearable. The slowed game play really breaks up a lot of the typical vs series combos that can last for days on end starting from the middle of the map and raising to the top of the wall on the other side. :P

As far as straight up 2d fighters goes though UMvC3 is probably the best one out right now. I still find myself buying a lot of the vs series that come out but I simply cannot get myself into them competitively as much as a lot of other fighters that are out there.

I'm assuming you own either a PS3 or an Xbox360 so UMvC3 is probably still your best bet. If you have a Wii though I'd definitely have to suggest Naruto Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

That link demonstrates really well the tournament level play involved for this game. I stopped playing it competitively last year though but won a lot of online tournaments as well as some in the pacific northwest. It has an intensely high skill cap but is beyond obtainable if you main a 4 of the top tier fighters.

As far as any other suggestions go everything on the EVO 2012 lineup is worth at least trying. I stopped playing Brawl competitively when it started going more underground so I'm waiting for the new Smash series that will be coming out on the next Wii to get serious about fighters again.

League of Legends is my current video game addiction. I do get to spend a lot of time outdoors regardless of playing 5-6 hours of video games a day every day. Whenever I get haters though I remind myself that through playing tournaments for all of the various games I play I've probably banked over $7,000 in prizes and money including a $1,500 laptop to supplement my income, so why not? :lmafo:

Sorry for the wall-o-text. It's not normal to have a good conversation in the gaming grotto because most posts revolve around whatever is the flavor of the month. Sorry again for the semi thread jack too.  :irishtoast:

EDIT: Oh and if you don't mind running emulation software on your computer you can buy a usb plug in that allows you to plug in super nintendo controllers. I have one of these and find myself playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters and Street Fighter 2 Alpha all the time. Those are the real classics that got me hooked into fighters.

lol no worries, I've enjoyed our little conversation. I've never seen that Naruto game, it looks pretty neat. I'll have to give it a try if I ever get the chance

Thanks for elaborating on the smash bros. video, it makes perfect sense now

yeah, I do love 90% of everything about UMvC3...  later on I might type out what I think needs to be fixed, as if it will make a difference...but that's one game I'd pay another $50 for a new version of, if it were to fix what is wrong with the game, which wouldn't be impossible. Despite my frustrations I still think the game is epic

Street Fighter X Tekken was quite disappointing. I tried and tried again to love it, and I did enjoy it...but it has way too many bugs and infinite combos that weren't meant to be in the game, and wtf is up with all the ridiculous robots clumsily falling over and zombie mastadons and dinosaurs in the backgrounds...it's kinda hard to take it seriously. Once I almost lost to some guy who had cammy and just kept walking forward and tapping light punch, and my character had no way to escape it.

Somehow I got out of it and won :seriousbusiness:. But ultimately I sorta just put that game down and haven't felt drawn back to it

So now I'm optimistically waiting on Tekken Tag 2, which I'm sure will, like anything, have it's ups and downs, but hopefully overall it pleases

I also haven't tried Virtua Fighter 5...I read what you said about being able to side-step to win, but that might not be such an issue against highly skilled opponents, but I wouldn't know

No, it definitely isn't worth it to rely on sidesteps for sure but it was a new account online for the game so the newcomers and people trying out online mode for the first time were easy wins. I think he was 6/3 for wins losses when I started playing and by the time I got off he was 14/3. I'm sure once his rank rises it will get a lot tougher but since it isn't my account I'll never get to vs someone worthy.

That's why I'm hoping to get a game in with psilocybinjunkie some time. :awesomenod:

I'm with you on SF x Tekken though, I still pick it up here and there but it was mostly just the thought of the game that got me hooked in the first place. VF5 though was just a little clunky for me and I can hardly get past the characters voice overs and one liners. That's what VF has always been like though.

Tekken Tag Tourney 2 looks promising though.
