I've took a week long trip to California to go to Coachella. Was amazing. Best music Festival I've been to for sure. The line up was so amazing. There wasn't a single period in between shows that didn't have an amazing artist or group playing something.
Was about a 26 hour drive there and back. On the way there I stopped in Las Vegas for the first time and stopped at a casino (never really been to a casino). Lost about $35 dollars and then decided to leave before I lost anymore, haha. Vegas was cool to see for a couple hours though. Once we got to the festival it was about 1 AM. Set up tent and then slept till the next day. Next day we wake up, meet our tent neighbors, who were chill on all sides of us (we ended up hanging out with a few of them for most of the festival). On the first day we took LSD (which was really strong and really clean) at about noon. We thought this would be the peak of the heat, but we were definitely wrong. We go into the festival, but as the LSD comes up the heat gets insane. It ended up hitting about 106° F. Because of the heat the whole weekend I didn't really feel like tripping for the rest of the weekend though, so this is the only time I tripped. First, went to check out LA Riots. They played a decent set, a long set though. R3hab was after them, but he ended up being like 30-45 minutes late, so he only played for a little bit. I was wanting to see more of him seeing as I follow his music, but oh well, drop in the bucket compared to what was coming up later in the day. The first band I see (while peaking on the LSD) was the Arctic Monkeys. I'd wanted to see the Arctic Monkeys for many years, and listened to a lot of them when I was younger, so this was just awesome to see them as the first band on my list as I'm peaking. I basically just walk into the festival, and it's already damn amazing; right from the get go. The sound quality on not just the main stage, but every single stage was great. Very clear, and it didn't hurt your ears at all. At the Arctic Monkeys, there were already so many people. Got me going and exited for the rest of the show. Next I caught the end of Madeon's set. Only caught like 10 minutes of it since I spent the whole time at Arctic Monkeys (which was worth it) so I didn't catch too much. Sounded great though. I was definitely hoping to catch more of Madeon's set, but like most of the people playing I had to give leeway to other people playing at the same times. So much great music happening at the same time it was ridiculous. After that it was Alesso, and he did great, but at this point I was fading after the peak of the LSD trip and was not feeling in a very hard house mood (this would change in a little bit though). So after Alesso I go over to The Rapture. I had never heard of the Rapture before, but they were amazing. They were this band that was very jazzy and funky. The bassist and guitarist were damn awesome. After the Rapture, AfroJack played. I had seen Afrojack a couple years ago in Denver before he got huge, and he was damn awesome then, so I was expecting a lot. Exceeded my expectations, Afrojack played great. Kind of poppy music, but great house DJ/producer all around. After Afrojack was The Black Keys. They were the headliners for the first night. I had not listened to much of the black keys before the first day, so I didn't know what to expect. Blew my damn mind. Somewhere half way through the set, they had John Fogerty as a guest appearance, and played "The Weight". Was an awesome cover. During the Black Keys, Explosions in the Sky was playing. I'd seen them live before, so I caught about 10 minutes of it and then went to the main stage. Explosions in the Sky is a great band, but since I'd seen them before I decided to focus on other acts for the day. There were several people on the first day that I missed. The biggest act that I missed out on completely was Amon Tobin. Didn't see anything from him, which hurt a little inside. I was tripping a little too hard (not focused) and didn't have a clock on me, so I lost track of the time at other shows. After The Black Keys were done, it was time for fucking Swedish House Mafia. At this point I lost my friend, and there was definitely too many people to find anyone. At night when everyone was inside the festival, it was sooo filled will people. I think I heard that somewhere around 90,000 people came for the second weekend, and it definitely felt like it. Every time there was a main performance, there was an ocean of people. When I go to music festivals, I try hard not to dick around. I go up as close as I can so I can hear and see everything. Swedish House Mafia was no exception. Somewhere near the end of the Black Keys set I took a bunch of MDMA to prepare for Swedish House Mafia, and I was rolling hard for it. I'd seen Axwell before, but not Swedish House Mafia all together. Was damn awesome. The light show they prepared for Coachella was pretty mind blowing. One other band during the weekend had a better stage performance, but at this point of the first day, this was the sickest light show set up I'd ever truly seen in person. You can watch the video below, but it doesn't even really do the performance justice. You had to be there live, because they didn't just have lights coming from the stage, they had high powered lasers set up all around the festival, blaring lasers from every corner for a mile straight. It was mind blowing. Not to mention that they had MULTIPLE planes flying around during the Swedish House Mafia with LED lights underneath the planes, making them look like UFO's. Shit was unreal. (Couldn't find a video from Week 2, the week I went. Week 1 video will do.) That was the end of the first day. Amazing first day. Though I definitely wish I hadn't tripped the LSD for it, even day one of Coachella was mind blowing enough to get me super pumped for the next two days. Once I got back to the camp, I waited a bit for my friend as we got separated before Swedish House Mafia. Ended up chilling with my tent neighbors for a little bit, drinking beers and just talking. I realized that for the whole time my neighbors were damn awesome. We realized that one of our neighbors however had taken their car out of the camping area. Bad idea for them, because there was no way to get it back in if you left. Oh well, because two other people who were from Colorado like us ended up taking their spot. They were supposed to be in the VIP camping area, but because their plane was a little late, they had to sneak in to our camping area. They were chill as hell too. Next day I wake up at about 9 AM sweating hard. Second day was definitely hotter than the day before. I was getting somewhat used to the heat though, and an early start wasn't a bad idea. I'd never in my life been so dehydrated, or so hot. Was definitely not used to the weather at first. Drank through about 10 water bottles (brought about 150 bottles of water, haha) to rehydrate, and then went into the festival after getting some food. We were in the festival at about 11. They had this off stage that was not on the main listings called the DO LAB. The DO LAB was not one of the main 5 stages, but it ended up being one of my favorite. I hadn't known about it the first day, completely missed it. What was awesome about this stage is that is was being thrown all three days, all day by the same production company. The entire three days they had a huge variety of music, but the best part was that they turned the stage (which, even though it was the smallest stage, was still the size of a very large venue) into a giant misting station. There was mist every where. If you went to the front where people were dancing they had people with powerful misting hoses spraying the crowd CONSTANTLY. Not just a little spraying every couple minutes, but every single second during the day they were spraying those hoses. This stage was inbetween all 5 stages, so it made for the perfect pit stop in between shows. I was so happy to find out about this oasis, and when I found it the guy on stage was one of the dudes from Beats Antique playing some swing music. Couldn't be happier. Spent about an hour here getting soaked and dancing to some upbeat swing house. Tons of fun to be had. After that I went over to check out Zeds Dead. I'd had the chance to see Zed's Dead before at Electric Forest, but never got to. Needless to say Zed's Dead was pretty sweet. He played what was mostly all his remixes, and it was a chill vibe. He's one of the few dubstep DJ's I enjoy, and the only one I really enjoyed at Coachella. After Zeds Dead was Martin Solveig, who played a very awesome set. Never listened to much of him, but he was worth seeing. After him I saw Sebastian Ingrosso. Sebastian Ingrosso is a part of Swedish House Mafia, so this was too good to pass up. It was like being at Swedish House Mafia all over again, but there was more room to dance and it was a little more upbeat. Good stuff. Martin Solveig Sebastian Ingrosso Next up was something I'd been looking forward to all day, The Shins. Now, The Shins, like the Arctic Monkeys, were a band I listed to a lot of when I was younger, so I was expecting a lot out of this. And once again, expectations exceeded. The Shins were awesome. They played all the songs I could have hoped them to, as well as songs I hadn't heard from them. They played very well and everyone was singing along. It was great to hear them play, and they were nice to mellow out to after all the electronic stuff earlier that day. Next I checked out multiple stages for a little bit while walking through the Do Lab to get sprayed with water some more. Went to the other side of the festival to see David Guetta. Left quick. Was not interested in David Guetta at all. He just wasn't that good compared to everyone else I'd seen. Not even going to bother you with a video of David Guetta. Was NOT feeling it. I also saw Bon Iver for a little bit. Caught this part: And Flying Lotus, who was also pretty awesome. Never heard of Flying Lotus before, but definitely worth checking out. Next up was Mike Snow. At this point I was shaking with anticipation mentally preparing myself for the next act: Radiohead. But that was still an hour and a half away, so I checked out Mike Snow. I didn't know who Mike Snow was by name, but I definitely recognized the songs. The musicians played very well live. Very on key. When Animal came on it was siiiick. EVERYONE was singing and clapping the whole song through. It was epic, and I went there not even knowing who it was I was coming to listen to. ^Check it ouuuut. After they got off I was headed straight for fucking Main Stage. Radiohead was about to come on and I had a feeling that it was going to be packed. I found this awesome area very close to the front. The sound was perfect in my position. I was waiting for this the whole day. Before they played I took a sub threshold dose of shrooms (about half a gram). Just enough to not trip, but to feel something. I was soooo exited for Radiohead. They were the band that I thought I'd NEVER get the chance to see live, and here I fucking was, early as shit and ready to have my mind blown. Radiohead was definitely one of my favorite bands when I was younger. Practically grew up with them as a teenager and have followed their music since. I can't even recall how many times I've listened to their albums all the way through. I held VERY high expectations for this, this was to be the peak of the show for me. When they got on, I had spine chills. It was definitely the most packed part of the entire show. The only other show during Radiohead was Kaskade, and I'll be damned if anyone in their right mind actually chose Kaskade over Radiohead. Pretty much the full 90,000 people, an ocean of people were behind me and I was very comfortable right up front. Unlike every other performance, people weren't jabbering on before Radiohead got on. They were all ready to see these guys. From the get go the show is amazing. They played Bloom from their new CD. The entire show through, they played songs from all their CD's, a great mix of everything. I've been to hundreds of shows, and about 7 or 8 music festivals. Let me just put this out there. Radiohead was the best musical performance I'd ever seen in my life. Without a doubt in my mind after they finished playing, without a doubt in my mind days afterwards. They were on key every second of their performance. They played easily 2 and a half hours (the longest of any band or artist there, more than twice as long as most of the people there). You can say what you want about them being over rated world wide, overplayed, too commercial. Honestly, I don't give a shit if this is your opinion. Being there in person to hear them play to tens of thousands of people was mind blowing. I went there expecting soo much out of them, and they out did my expectations ten fold. Beethoven couldn't have put on a better show if he tried. About half way through Radiohead's, the entire crowd was silent. An emergency medical team had to run to the front to grab someone who was passed out. She was probably seriously dehydrated, there was a medical helicopter landing right as they were picking her up. Everyone was calm and made room for them to pick her up (imagine running through 90,000 people and looking for a body amongst all that). That aside, after that, they played Karma Police. One of my favorite songs, easily. Everyone was singing to it. They played it perfectly. So perfectly. After they finished playing there was silence. People were mind blown. Instead of cheering, just silence. Then all of a sudden, people in the front start singing the song again even though there was no music to sing to. It picks up, and all of a sudden everyone is singing to the band, "For a minute there, I lost my self, I lost my self, I lost my seeeelf". I couldn't even wrap my mind around it. Never in my life have I seen so many people come together and sing something without music to sing to. I was practically in tears through the whole Karma Police song. The crowd really felt it. It was just AMAZING. Fucking Amazing. When they played You and Whose Army people were equally mind blown. Earlier I said that Swedish House Mafia had the best light set up I'd seen to that point. Radiohead's threw theirs out of the water. Their stage was epic. During You and Whose Army, all the screens they had on the stage started moving up and down unexpectedly to the music. They were all on strings being moved. It was really beautiful. Like I said earlier, Beethoven couldn't have thrown a better performance. Radiohead was absolutely the best live show of ANYTHING I've ever seen, plays, movies concerts all thrown in. It brought me to tears at some points. Nothing was played out of key. Everything was timed perfectly. They basically played three encores. Thom York is an amazing singer, and the band plays too well for words. It's hard for me to exaggerate just how well they did, and just how happy it made me to hear them live. Seeing them alone was worth all the money I payed on the tickets to the show and for the gas getting there and back. Phenomenal. I can't honestly believe I will ever see a show so perfectly done, so full of energy. They set the bar very high for me when it comes to performances of any kind. After they finished, I went back to the camp and passed out right away. Did not stay up this time around. Was time for some heavy sleep. Woke up at 9 again the next day to the heat once again. The third day I was definitely used to the heat though. I started off with Zedd (not to be confused with Zeds Dead). He was really good. One of the better early morning DJ's to play. He played an awesome House version of The Legend of Zelda. Loved it. After Zedd I chilled at the Do Lab to cool off with the hoses some more. After that I saw Beats Antique. Beats Antique has been one of my favorite bands for the last year or so and I saw them last year at Electric Forest. They did amazing. They had this guy on the Clarinet and the Saxophone this time around, and he added A LOT to the band. I hadn't seen the woodwind player the first time when seeing them, so it was a decent surprise. Made their music much more swingy. Beats Antique is soooo good live. Relaxed a bit until DaDa Life got on. Dada Life was sooo good. I'd seen em before 2 years ago, but they were much much better this time seeing them. They threw it down HARD. Great stuff. Wasn't expecting such an awesome set from them. I probably danced the hardest at this set. After Dada Life was Gotye. He was pretty awesome live, however he was at a smaller stage and it was sooo packed for the mellow music. I watched about half Gotye's set before heading towards main stage. Next up was JUSTICE. I was super exited for Justice to play. They didn't really meet my expectations, but at the same time I may have just been pretty crashed out from the rest of the day as well. They played a lot of the songs I was hoping to hear though and it was pretty good all around. Super cool performance all around though. At the end of Justice's set, Girl Talk was playing on the next stage over. I checked it out for a little bit. Girl Talk had a crazy crowd, sooo many people. Girl Talk pretty much had as many people at his stage as Justice had at theirs. After that, I was pretty crashed out and ready to take it easy. I went back to the Do Lab and to my surprise they had this crazy play going on. It was like a musical theater/cirque du soleil kind of thing. The people playing music had a guitarist, drummer, AWESOME violinist and then there were several dancers on stage playing out a dramatic show to the music. This was held at the smallest stage, though it was really something else and a nice surprise (surprising because nothing at the Do Lab was listed with set times or anything. It was all an independent production within the festival but not on the main set lists). It was called the Lucient Dossier Experience. Well worth seeing if you ever get the chance. Next up was Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. I stuck around for a little bit of it. Probably the only show I stayed in the far back for. Last performance of the whole show. Not really my type of music, but they put on a great show none the less. I was far too crashed out to get too into it. Somewhere in the middle of the Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog set I went to go check out Avicii. Avicii presented his new stage set up at Coachella and it was damn awesome. A gigantic head with mapped out videos all over it. It was pretty cool. He played a cool set as well. After wards I head back to the campsite. I chill with the tent neighbors for a little bit (as they weren't letting anyone leave until 2 AM) while packing all our stuff. Once they open the line to get out, it literally only took about 10 minutes to leave the whole festival. The city police did an awesome job directing traffic out, because it took no time and the lines were pretty well organized. Overall, best music festival experience I've ever had. Would definitely go again provided the set lists remain as great as they were this year.

Quote: I don't know man, the price was pretty reasonable to me. Two weeks before Coachella, I was trying to get tickets to Radiohead at a venue in Colorado, but they sold out in a matter of minutes and were being resold for over $300. Then all of a sudden Coachella pops up and tickets were only $350 when I got them. Not a bad price at all considering the huge line up. Gas, food and party favors included, I probably spent about 650 - 700 total on the whole trip, which is really just a week's paycheck anyway. No real loss to me and it was more than worth it. Honestly, before this year, I probably would have never considered Coachella or Bonnaroo. But after I saw the line up this year for Coachella I was hooked. At the time of buying the tickets, there wasn't a better line-up to be seen from any festival that had their line ups out at the time, at least not for me personally. Other festivals I've been to were Electric Daisy Carnival's in Colorado (Meh...), Snowball in Colorado (Tons of Fun), and Electric Forest in Michigan (Which was the best out of the first three by far). But Coachella definitely blew all three of these out of the water for me. So far Electric Forest and Coachella are close, but Coachella definitely beat it. I'm seriously considering checking out Bonnaroo and Wakarusa this year. I never thought I'd enjoy a huge festival like that in the way I did, but I looooved it. Quote: Exactly. Quote: Soooo true. The only time I wore shoes the whole weekend was the first day. It became clear after that that the field was perfect for barefootedness. Nice flat ground that didn't keep the heat in from the sun. Was perfect. I was barefoot for the entirety of the last two days, no problem at all. I don't even think I stepped on a single rock. Quote: We got one of the furthest possible camping spots left as we arrived at about 2 or 3 in the morning. Wasn't a big issue. The camping was well organized. We were definitely the furthest away camping wise, but it was only about a mile walk at most. I was walking much more than a mile inside the festival grounds regularly. I felt fine. ![]() Lineup wasn't really all the average. It was pretty damn great. You can rag on Snoop Dogg being a headliner, but that isn't even what I came out to see. There was plenty going on during Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre's set to keep anyone occupied if it wasn't there kind of music, and I did just that.

Quote: Quote: Oh wow...Something I actually agree with you on Like Bassfreak said, fun can be had at any festi for sure. But the big mainstream commercial festivals just aren't my thang. Venues are meh, lame security/cops, the hours the music is played, the way camping is, way too many people...I can go on. If ya dig what the The Do Lab did at Coachella, these festival and gatherings are more along the lines of the way they do thangs...incorporating all sorts of other things besides music...Festivals like, Symbiosis, Emissions, Enchanted Forest, Raindance, Shambhala, just to name a few. Different strokes for different folks, and to each his own. Brochella -OM .
