I both hate and love Israel.

Israel has legitimacy as a nation, it was founded peacefully. And I have a big respect for their culture. Who else has successfully revived a 2000-year-dead language? That shit is amazing.

Israel seems intent on destroying its own credibility, though. The hardliners can suck a dick. What they're doing is no better than the genocides they use to justify their actions.

I've got a few Jewish friends, and as great as they are, they are ALL very pro Israel and won't concede even the slightest criticism

Israelis are good people.  No reason not to support Israel.

I support Israel.  Palestine is a victim, but not a victim of Israel, they are a victim of the Islamic hegemony in the region.  It is there cultural 'brothers' that use them as a hapless pawn in their fight for Islamic hegemony and against multiculturalism in the mid east.

Very this. None of the Arab countries actually give a shit about Palestine, but they're filled with racists who hate that a culture with such strong Western influence is flowering in the region. They have done everything they can to escalate this conflict while simultaneously turning their backs on the Palestinians themselves, offering no aid or support. For them, Palestine is no more than an excuse for their parochial hostility towards Israel.

Palestine itself didn't have much of a "national identity" to speak of until large numbers of Israelis had settled. There's nothing ancient or fundamental about this conflict. It's purely fueled by demagoguery on both sides.

Still though, Israel has got to work out a solution to this problem. They are the most prosperous and powerful country in the region, and it's up to them to find a way to coexist peacefully with their neighbors. They also have got to bring down the walls. Gaza and the west bank are essentially giant concentration camps, and that is not at all kosher. (See what I did there?)

The two-state solution sounds like a good idea until you notice that the Palestinian state would be the beginning of the end for Israel. It's already a very small country geographically, and the Palestinians want two non-contiguous chunks cut out of it. It's not a very reasonable demand. If they ceded Gaza, it might be slightly more reasonable, but that is not going to happen.

Is that how you peacefully coexist with your violent neighbors?  Tear down your backyard fence?  The walls have done their job in facilitating coexisting peacefully with their neighbors.  Occupying the golan heights is how they have found to peacefully coexist with an aggressive syria, occupying the sinai peninsula is how they found to peacefully coexist with an aggressive egypt.

That is pretty much all you can do.  When all your neighbors want to kill you, you have to create a perimeter buffer zone for your civilian population.  That can only be done by displacing the people who want to kill you out of that perimeter.

What?

Quote:
In an effort to win independence, Zionists now waged a bitter guerrilla war against the British. The underground Jewish militias, the Haganah, formed an alliance called the Jewish Resistance Movement with the Etzel and Stern Gang to fight the British.

Quote:
The unified Jewish resistance movement broke up in July 1946, after Etzel bombed the British Military Headquarters in the King David Hotel killing 92 people.

Quote:
Palestinian Arab forces consisted of village militias buttressed by the Arab Liberation Army. In contrast, the Yishuv was highly organized, better educated and prepared under the able leadership of Ben-Gurion. The Jewish Agency had several underground militias, including many World War II veterans and an elite, professional force, several thousand strong called the Palmach. The Jews had a manpower advantage over the local Arabs among males in the twenty to forty-four age group[60] and a motivational advantage as they believed they faced extermination.

And that's only before the 1948 Arab Israeli war (the first of many).

Israeli forces routinely sweep through Palestinian settlements, forcing residents to leave or they are shot.
The land and properties are then sold to Israelis.

Not anti Jewish but I don't see why people support Israel.

That sounds like a personal problem.  Not that you dont support Israel, but that you cant even see why people do...  Usually a well thought out position will necessarily consider the other side and the valid points to the other side.  If you cant even see the other side then its likely your position is not well thought out.

I didn't say I didn't see the points on the other side, I said that I don't see why people think that those points redeem the bad things that have been done by Israel and therefore choose to support it.

There's nothing exceptional about the fact that Israel carries out military operations.

I don't support the way they're doing their business right now. The government is controlled by a hardline far-right coalition. Israel did nothing to earn the onus of making peace with its neighbors, but it has unfortunately fallen on Israel regardless. The current government has no intention of dealing with that responsibility. Much of the population of Israel is also upset with this status quo.

Business as usual, amirite?

Imagine if an entire population suddenly moved into your city or town citing a two thousand year old religious document, then proceeded to force you and your people to live like animals.

Except that's not really what happened. They cited the British Mandate. The land was controlled by England after World War I and II, and they let a bunch of Jews fleeing persecution in Europe live there and supported them to build schools and medical facilities. It was not even a conquered land, it was an undeveloped land whose prior government (Ottoman Empire, another foreign colonial power) had collapsed. The Israelis were welcomed by most of the natives. First blood was drawn by a small group of native extremists.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1920_Palestine_riots

Quote:
Speeches by Arab religious leaders during the festival, in which traditionally large numbers of Muslims gathered for a religious procession, led to a serious outbreak of violent assaults on the city's Jews. Five Jews and four Arabs were killed and several hundreds were wounded. In its wake, sheikhs of 82 villages round the city and Jaffa, claiming to represent 70% of the population, issued a document protesting the violence against the Jews.

This is a shit-ball long in its roll down shit hill, but the Israelis are not really to blame.

I was raised "Catholic" and I'm an American. I despise what Israel is doing to Palestine and I feel terrible for the plight of the Palestinians.

I have no relation to any Middle Eastern peoples. I have no reason to hate Jewish people. In fact, more of my people were killed during WW2 than the Jews. Also, it's very likely my ancestors weren't Christian until Hitler.

Regardless, if you look at what's really happening to the Palestinians - you know, like having their water stolen from them, midnight raids, kidnappings etc - you'd change your mind about how the poor Jews have to deal with these MONSTERS.

I don't generalize.

A lot of Israelis hate what's going on too. Most people on the ground just want the shitstorm to end, but assholes on both sides are perpetuating the conflict they started. Hamas keeps launching missiles, Israel keeps flouting Palestinian sovereignty at the expense of its people. It won't let up until both sides lay down their arms or one of them is totally obliterated.

Nationalism is a scourge of rational thought.

Imagine if you were forced to live like animals because of your repeated attempts to attack people that just wanted to live next to you peacefully.  You'd feel awfully butthurt, especially when your own racist religion was supposed to replace the one that you keep failing to kill.

That being said, neither side is innocent.

Yup.

The whole situation is really pretty depressing... even more depressing when you talk to people who pick a side. The conflict is fueled by ignorance and intolerance. It needs more people who realize that the human cost of the conflict is greater than the national cost of a resolution.

Islam is just 1400-year-old nationalism.

Get over it. Accept it. You can't take a side in this conflict without perpetuating it.
