Not overweight but I’d like to drop the layer of fat on my stomach.
    #16081016 -

Im a senior in high school, 5’8” and 140 lbs, not particularly overweight but I eat pretty unhealthily and I’ve gained an unsightly layer of fat on my stomach. A recent trip has inspired me to try and start trying to live healthier. I have decided (and begun) to start running everyday, if only for 15-20 minutes. Will this actually help me or what?

Yeah I figured as much, I plan to start some sort of workout routine in the near future. Any specific exercises you would suggest?

Seniors in High School aren't necessarily underage.

Especially in April, chances are (s)he is 18.

Yes, of course it will help, especially if you keep it up .  I would cut out refined sugars (white bread, soda, sweets) as well as start doing bridge-type core exercises.  Check youtube or google if you need more info on this, there is a ton of info out there and no equipment is needed.

Since you are young I feel I should drill this in:  Be very careful with your body, don't overtrain or push yourself too hard.  Be careful of your back when doing strength training, and mindful of feet/ankles/knees/hips when running.  Talk to other people or do research on your own about proper form and you will save yourself loads of pain and trouble.

Have fun!

Well for whatever reason I’m feeling really motivated right now, hopefully I can keep it up

One word: diet. Abs are made in the kitchen.

Really? Well I am trying to eat healthier but I wouldn’t call it a diet. Hopefully I can overcome that.

Diet + core exercises all the way. You won't get very far on aerobic exercise alone.

Pushups, Pull-ups, Dips, Hanging L-sits are easy and require nothing more than a playground. All are very good for abs/core/upper body.

Just tried a bridge core exercise before going on a 25 minute run, I feel really good! Not so much physically (I’m actually somewhat nauseous ) but more so mentally. I feel like I’ve actually done something useful with my day.

Obviously these things take quite a bit of time to start really making an effect, but about how many weeks/months do you think it will be (given I keep up my exercise as I hope) before I begin to see my efforts actually take effect?

If you stick to it religiously and diet in a smart/healthy fashion you should be there in a few months from your current weight/height. Once you drop 10-12 pounds of fat then I suspect you'll be where you want to be.

You'd be surprised how much of the hard-to-sculpt areas change when you go vegan

Having a good diet and being on a "diet" are most definately not the same thing.

Eating smaller meals more often will also make an amazing difference, we generally, paticularily in western culture eat far more than we need in any one sitting especially dinner.

A lot of heavy weight excercises exist that are great for burning fat and still won't make you bulky, using low rep heavy weights on large muscle groups combined with cardio and body weight excercises is the approach I use.

Body weight being:

Push ups, sit ups, chin ups, dips and a shitload of other excercises.  You can find a heap of info and different types of body weight stuff online.

Thank you for your help!
I’m not sure that I am really ready to go all out with a diet, I am simply trying to make some healthy adjustments in my life, though I should note that my appetite (though I am male) is surpassed by many a small female. I eat quite small amounts of food, the only problem is that in the past it has always been unhealthy food I chose to eat (On a day when I have school I often do not even eat until about 330). Now I am trying to cut out sodas (instead drinking water) and including more greens in my meals. Then of course I have also been running daily and now I have begun doing daily pushups, curls, and “the bridge” exercise that I had suggested to me earlier in this thread!

Then just keep it up!

Running, working out, and an altered diet will surely show some results within a month or two.  I'd have to admit that diet is surely most important for getting rid of it and keeping it off.  You don't have to "go on a diet" in the sense of starving yourself and eating salads all day.  Just eat healthier.. more lean meats, less processed sugar, etc.

Don't put too much focus on your abs. There's no such thing as spot reduction. You're not gonna lose fat on your stomach and keep the same level of fat on your arms or back or legs or anywhere else. The best thing would be to just focus on eating right, doing cardio, and having a balanced weight lifting routine. You'll wanna kick up your protein intake quite a bit but you'll still need to eat carbs and fats, just make sure they come from good places.

vegan is for pussies who think like sheeple, believe the hype, and don't know what their bodies really need.

go paleo and do crossfit.

low carb. high fat. short, vigorous training sessions.

dead serious.  start googling.
