Wam-pum! Yeehaaww!! Jesus traveling Christ, this stuff's good!" the Captain whooped, tucking the glass vials into his belt-case. "Keep it coming, Henry.  And God bless Sandoz labs!"

[That's the first paragraph.  What was it that you could not get past?]

spoiler

Franklin locked the bird into the metal sights, squeezing the trigger as the heavens gave birth and a blast of lightning and gunpowder lit up the desert sky, and he knew, instinctively, the secrets of the Phoenix.

Wisdom's Maw: The Acid Novel

by Tierney Smith
Relix magazine [November 1996]

Todd Brendan Fahey
Far Gone Books
$16.95 [1st-edition out of print]

Author Todd Brendan Fahey had no easy time getting his first novel into print as it was rejected by nearly 200 publishers over the course of five years. The enterprising writer, who holds a masters degree in professional writing from the University of Southern California, finally decided to publish it himself. The publishing companies' reluctance to touch this one is understandable, given the controversial nature of the material. Wisdom's Maw centers on a long-range classified CIA mind control experiment where paid volunteers are given various mind-altering substances, chiefly LSD-25, the "house reprogramming tool."

The story centers on project MK-ULTRA with Captain Al Hubbard at the helm. His objective? To stem the activities of the counterculture by creating (through the use of chemistry) a spokesperson for the radical youth movement who, unbeknownst to the subject himself, would lead his followers on a CIA-controlled mission designed to cripple the movement. Along the way, Fahey introduces us to a sleazy cast of characters that includes William Creasy, chairman of the Army Chemical Corps, and Dr. Sheldon Gottfried, director of MK-ULTRA. He also gives voice to such beat or counterculture icons as Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and Aldous Huxley (former or current paid government agents themselves). The latter envisions the results of a chemically-shaped human product, a so-called "Ubermensch" ("a perfect human being--a superman, if you will. He is an athlete, a field sergeant, an actor, an irresistible mind and body.").

It is Franklin Moore, graduate student from the University of Oregon, who becomes the focus of such lofty aspirations. It all begins in the CIA's Behavioral Research Ward where Moore is subjected to regular doses of LSD-25, his progress monitored chiefly by nurse (and later the subject's love interest), Lorraine Devlin. It isn't long before Moore is in blissed-out hippie speak mode ("I'm just tryin' to find out what's above us. Find out where God really lives."). By the time Moore's startled parents pay him a visit, he's acquired a fair share of fame and is living the countercultural existence to the hilt, ruling over a communal style scene where free love, stoned crashers and a party-like atmosphere abounds.

Things take a turn for the worse when an aggressively stoned chick accuses the Hells Angels of gang rape on Moore's property, and Moore is sentenced to a two-year stint in a minimum security prison. When the Senate votes to withhold funding for the CIA until MK-ULTRA and similar programs are dismantled (while the sale and production of LSD become a felony), Hubbard vows to stick with the project regardless. He then bankrolls an underground supply of LSD produced by a greedy young chemist named Prestin Mosely, who in turn sets up operations in a former laundry with a sign out front reading "Foundation For The Prevention Of Drug Abuse" (hey, this book is not without its elements of humor). From there, Hubbard gets Sam Giancana and his fellow mobsters to set up a big-time distribution network. Meanwhile, freed from prison, the increasingly independent-minded Moore naturally comes to be viewed as a threat to the secrecy of the classified project. In the danger that ensues, Fahey builds up the tension nicely, giving the very unconventional Wisdom's Maw all the makings of a classic thriller.

Fahey goes beyond the main storyline, offering the reader fascinating excursions into the odious activities of the intelligence services, which here include the Mob/CIA connection that result in JFK's assassination, and the FBI's "Midnight Climax" operation, which specialized in catching prominent personalities in compromising positions with the aid of a seemingly tireless prostitute. Wisdom's Mawalso includes vivid scenes of Neal Cassady, Carlo Marx and Jack Kerouac, who form a kind of dissipated brotherly alliance's savaged casualties of similar chemical experiments. That the CIA's use of mind-controlling experiments (involving the use of LSD) is, in reality, more truth than fiction makes this collision of fact and fantasy with its dizzying collage of humor, horror and clandestine intrigue one thought-provoking, and ultimately disturbing, read.

Not "background music"; just a short, intro-tune by Bowie on the "landing page."

Review

The recreational use of mind altering substances began with the invention of fermented beverages somewhere toward the end of the stone age. With the coming of agriculture came the arrival of certain plants as a means for mind "expansion" experiences. The industrial age was also the era of man-made mind-bending pharmaceuticals. The "information age" is now well along in giving us "virtual realities" along with our chemical ones. So Todd Fahey's "acid novel" Wisdom's Maw is a work of complex, insightful, controversial fiction whose time has come. Wisdom's Maw alters convention reality and our inner mental landscapes with the combined finesse of a buzzsaw and the accuracy of a laser beam. Wisdom's Maw is a page turner and a mind burner of a novel that will leave the reader mentally breathless. Wisdom's Maw is a head-trip on paper and destined to join other cult classics like On The Road, Stranger in a Strange Land, and is a kind of Alice in Wonderland for grownups in the 90s. -- Midwest Book Review
