Linear Algebra - What is the difference between minors and cofactors?

#15274652 - 10/25/11 04:33 AM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I don't really understand the difference. Take a 3x3 matrix for example. You take the minor by eliminating a certain row and a certain column and calculating the determinant of the resulting 2x2 matrix, right? This is pretty much the same thing you do to find the cofactor, according to my book and a website I just read.

The cofactor is the minor multiplied by a power of -1:

(–1)^i+j·M_{i, j} = A_{i, j}
