Asda pays ?500,000 to woman who slipped on mushroom

Asda has agreed to pay ?550,000 compensation to a woman who slipped on a mushroom on the floor of one of its stores.

Asda Stores admitted liability for the accident which shopper Beverley Jackson said had left her wheelchair-bound after a hip operation failed.

A trial scheduled for May to settle the case has now been abandoned after Asda agreed to settle the claim and pay her legal expenses.

Mrs Jackson, from Hatfield, Hertfordshire, was initially diagnosed with damaged fingers after she fell at her local Asda in 1997.

But she had to give up work in late 1998 because of increasing pain in her right hip.

The 44-year-old underwent an operation the following year but the artificial joint failed and had to be removed.

Asda had taken the case to the Court of Appeal in a bid to introduce new evidence alleging that her hip problems would have occurred without the accident.

Judges have been told the appeal had been withdrawn by Asda and the settlement agreed.
