the simpsons vs. prohibition
    #14089355 - 03/08/11 09:40 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I'm watching The Simpsons episode about prohibition.

This episode is great. If you watch it with the broader sociopolitical implications of any given form of prohibition in mind, it makes a lot of very true statements about the forms of prohibition we all deal with in real life.

Much funnier and more resonant than the more recent medical-marijuana episode... :strokebeard:

The Simpsons must've hired some badass new writers in the last few years, every time I've caught them on TV since probably about around when the movie came out I have enjoyed the episodes a lot  I love the Simpsons but there were a few years where I didn't watch them at all and I've watched them since I was a kid.

I didn't see this episode, I'll have to check it out. Prohibition is bad mmkay.

It's from the 8th season and it's called "Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment."

It's a great episode. IMO it's from the "golden age" of the Simpsons, seasons 1-8. Subsequent seasons have not impressed me. Some have been better than others but none have matched up to the original quality of its writing. I never watch it these days. :frown:

its a shame to see what The Simpsons are now.. id say the golden age stretched to about the 10th season.

either way, when you think about it, at this point that show has been terrible longer than it was amazing.

Much. They should have put that show down ten years ago. It would have been sad, but not nearly as sad as it is to watch new episodes today.

You can see the writers trying so hard to be as smart and edgy as they were for the earlier seasons, but they just can't do it. The Simpsons' sun has set.

Yeah, it gets old for writers and audiences alike. It's natural. You see the same thing everywhere; message boards, clubs, music, movies, websites, shows, etc etc. (Remember when it was good way back when?) That being said, early Simpsons.. Nothing can touch that. Nothing.

Yeah, I'm completely certain that early Simpsons WAS in fact much better than early Family Guy.

Futurama, I don't know. I honestly feel like it still has the bite that The Simpsons had back when it ruled the roost. Not like anything else on right now.

Matt Groening is a genius. Has anybody read Life in Hell? It's honestly no surprise that all the forces about which he has displayed the most disdain have devoured his creation. He came up with the Simpsons while he was waiting to show his Life in Hell characters to the executives to pitch an animation series. He suddenly realized he didn't want to lose control of those characters, so he scribbled a random American TV family on a napkin to save them. That family became The Simpsons.
