That's why I think that due to anonymity, the social behavior on internet forums is not an accurate image of the real world, but in fact a very distorted filtered one.

I've been trying to lurk more and post less, and the change in perspective is alarming.
When I have no intention to post, and thus no stake in the game, it becomes appallingly obvious what a pissing match most threads are, here as well as on other forums.

I don't think anyone honestly cares about the opinions of the strangers on the other side of the screen.
For the most part, we're not here to learn from each other. We're here to hit "refresh" until something juicy comes up that we can jump on.

Yes and no, either way we need to try to make it work, its the single most important tool we have for connecting people from all around the world, unfortunately at this point the connection is often superficial or negative. It can be very meaningful though.

Yes, being anonymous certainly permits many people to become assholes with no fear of repercussions, but at the same time being anonymous allows many people to open up and say what they could never say in real life due to taboos or social convention.  It's a two-edged sword.

There's some truth in this, but I'm not sure I'd leave the phrasing as it is.
There's no question that in my OP, I was talking about my behavior as much as or more than anyone else's.

I've been trying to get my shit straight lately, be a sort of decent human being, and so I've been refraining from reacting with bitterness and douchebaggery to posters who I might ordinarily shit on. Needless to say, my daily postcount has plummeted. That's what I meant by "lurking more, posting less."

But taking that different perspective on my own posts, kind of automatically gave me a different one on everyone else's. And I realized that almost everyone else was acting just like me. Posting for the accolades, stroking their own egos, not really caring if the collective dialog went anywhere. 

I think that, quite simply, it is easier to be a selfish communicator online than in real life. So that's where we come to do it.
Maybe this is making people nicer in real life, and we should embrace it?
Or maybe it just sets everyone's conversational expectations on "ego gratification" and makes real life conversations worse. Really hard to say.

Obviously, I am overstating my case. The internet is not pure ego masturbation and douchebaggery. But the douche sure seems a hell of a lot more concentrated here than it is in a kickback with real people.
