Alexander Shulgin

Alright well I'm discovering more and more about Alexander Shulgin and his work.  I am interested in the man because he had an unusual understanding of tryptamines and their function in human brain chemistry.  I know that he authored PiHKAL and TiHKAL, but I'm not so well versed in chemistry to be able to comprehend these works.

My question is this: does anyone have suggestions for a recent high school graduate who is interested in understanding chemistry for their own enjoyment?  I did well in highschool, but didn't care much about the grades, so if there are any good textbooks available for a hobbyist, please, help a brotha out! :hippie:

I don't really know, but I would suggest looking for some kind of 'intro to chemistry' literature.

Yea I've been googlin', just thought ppl on shoomery might have more experience with the kind of knowledge I'm tryin to gain.

I really just want to educate myself to the point of being able to understand (to an extent) what the chemicals I put into my body do to my brain.

just keep reading more and more, read the rhodium archive for understanding of drug manufacture better, orgsyn and sciencemadness, etc.  I took two college level classes of chem with having just read a bunch of that stuff, although I must admit I've never synthed an illicit chemical in my life (i wish).  I extracted the alkaloids in nutmeg once, but that's about it.  I got an A in those two classes though and didn't study once

It doesn't take a biochemist to follow the first half of Pikhal (I'm reading it now and I was an Anthropology major) - the first part of the book is a historical account of how he ended up where he did. And even the 2nd half, although replete with chemical constructions, still has fascinating annotations about durations/effect/unexpected elements of many of the unique chemicals that Shulgin synthesized. Check it.
