Roommates partying makes me nervous
    #13495284 -

Hey so I'm living with 3 other people in a duplex-style house right now.

I had my Klipsch speakers (~$2000 when purchased) setup with my 32" television (~$1000 when purchased) in the downstairs common area.

Because of all the partying they did and all the cleaning up after them I did, I gave the speakers to my sister, who lives on the other side of town, and I moved the television into my room.

I did this because my roommates would party late into the night 3-4 times a week and leave me with a mess to clean up (i.e. beer, dirt, etc. on the floors, food containers and food all over the place). Basically it looked like a hurricane came through after every night of their partying.

This eventually lead to me having to devote about 2hrs every sunday to clean up the week's mess, with little to no help.

So, my roommates, one in particular, are very unhappy I moved my entertainment center.

They say that they will replace it if it is broken, and will even move it into my room on the weekends or when people come over. They say they will help clean, but they've said that before and haven't really followed through.

I enjoy having my stuff away from the partying because;

- I now only clean the floors which takes ~15 minutes since I'm not cleaning the common room because I never go in there anymore.
- I don't have to worry about people accidentally breaking something of mine or someone stealing it.
-I'm not kept up late at night having to constantly check on the situation of the house outside of my room.

However, my life has become difficult because;

- The roommate residing on the same floor as I said that unless I bring the entertainment center back out, he will stop cleaning up after himself completely because "It doesn't bother him."
- It has caused tension between my roommates and I because they think what I did was rude and inconsiderate.

They argue that people are always over because none of our other friends live in houses right now (apartments or dorms). They say they will replace anything that is broken, but because of my OCD and personality I am just uncomfortable with people using my expensive stuff. I know that's selfish, but it's not like I don't let them use my other stuff (bong, a lot of the furniture, other basic household items, drugs, etc.). None of them have contributed anything above $50 worth to the house and there are other tv's that could replace mine.

Should I just deal with it until the lease is up (7 months)? Is it that unreasonable to remove my stuff from the common area? They have already said the partying is NOT going to stop.

As long as my stuff is in my room, I don't care if, when, or where they party because I don't have to worry about anything bad happening.
I have confronted them on the subject many times, but they have given me the impression, that until I move the center back out, they are going to "act as if I don't live here".

TL;DR
- Moved my nice tv into my room and gave my speakers to my sister because roommates won't stop partying all the time and barely clean up after themselves. They are giving me hell about it. What do?

Help me come to a solution Shroomery!

This is the equivalent of holding his breath until he gets his way.  Your roommates are shit.  Fuck them and ignore it.  I've had my fair share of bad roommates as well, once I had to buy out the lease (paid a month of rent not living there) because he was such a douche.  I've also had my fair share of clean, decent roommates.

The TV belongs in your room because its your tv.  This is a good opportunity for you to get over your OCD, because if you don't your roommates are going to keep walking all over you.

Don't fight with them over it, don't get upset.  Be calm and reasonable and let them act like children.  If it comes down to it, buy out the lease.

I would tell your messy roomates to fuck off..  If they want an entertainment center, they best start saving their money...  Do you honestly think that they would take care of your stuff, when they cannot even keep their living area clean? Dont think dudes give a fuck about your or your stuff. If you are unhappy living there, find another place.  I am sure people would bend over backwards for a reliable roomate.

Fuck them. You aren't their maid. And double fuck them if they don't like you protecting your property from their bonehead antics.

if they have the cash to replace the entertainment center after catastrophic failure then they can replace it now.  hell id even throw down a few bucks for a "Group TV" they can all trash and just leave me alone.  What you are doing is called growing up.  its a rare phenomenon that only afflicts 35% of youth today.

So there is a room mate who is threatening to be a horrible person by leaving his shit everywhere because you won't let him watch your TV?

I'd have laughed in his face and I think that would be the end of it.

Also, cut them off from your bong, drugs, company, etc.  People trying to blackmail you with their own idiocy deserve the total ignore treatment.

yeah no shit.  so far 7 responses and all say "fuck them"  they are adults they can buy their own TVs.  whoever owns the flat should really worry about the TV.  plus mr clean over there is really going to not only piss you off but everyone else with his domicile terrorism of not cleaning

Alright thanks for reinforcing my position everyone!

It is designed to be a duplex, so I would be the most primary victim of my roommate not cleaning up after himself. He knows it would really only bother me as well because of my OCD. My other roommate doesn't really come downstairs unless it's to party, and he arguable just as messy.

Now all the ways I've tried to convey these ideas to them haven't really worked.

How could I reply in a manner that effectively conveys my situation. Some quotes that they throw at me are:

"You're being rude because you're not sharing your stuff, that's like preschool things man."

"[You're weird] because you'd rather isolate yourself in your room most of the time rather than hang out with us."
  - I do spend a lot of time in my room, mostly because when they are upstairs watching TV (YES THERE'S ANOTHER, OLDER, TV UPSTAIRS WITH CABLE), because I don't watch the shows they watch and I really enjoy being alone.

I can tell them to fuck off, but I'd rather resolve this in a way that doesn't result in me living in hell for the next few months until the lease is up.

Alright well since it's going to be 2v1 here I want to be prepared for the argument, because usually when they've ganged up on me in the past, I'm lost for words.

I'm just going to say;

"It makes me uncomfortable having my expensive items out all the time and I don't want to have to move them every time people come over. I contribute just as much to this house as you do. If you want to treat me badly just because I don't want to share everything with you, then be childish and do so.

If you have the money to replace a tv, then just buy one for yourself, just because I live with you doesn't mean you're entitled to all my stuff."

I don't know, any other good arguments I could throw in there?

Thanks for being there for me Shroomery! Shows there are some good people out there :thumbup:

I like the sounds of telling them you would kick in a little for a group set up... I mean personally I have to have a TV in my room so just tell them you want one in there but you could throw in a little on a "living room" TV

YOU NEED TO EMBRACE YOUR OCD AND GET OVER IT, BECOME A PIG YOURSELF, START MASTURBATING IN THE COMMON AREA, BLOWING LOADS ON THE COFFEE TABLE IS A GREAT WAY TO START THE DAY.

TELL THEM THAT YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE YOUR OWN SPACE AND THAT IT IS ALL GRAVY, JUST GET YOUR OWN IDIOT BOX, IT IS NOT WORTH DYING OVER.

PEACE MAN, MAY YOUR GENEROSITY BE INCREASED THREE FOLD UPON YOU!

Can't do it. Won't do it.

Pretty much just tell them your honest opinion trying to be as least condescending as possible.

If you can say the words you posted in the right manner and tone, IE be a gentleman about it. Nobody can blame you.

If they start playing games, tell em kick rocks.

Stand your ground. The fact that you said they have said they will clean and then didn't do it, and that one of them is trying to blackmail you into bringing your TV backup means that anything happened to it, they definitely would NOT cover anything like they have said they will.

Ignore them and GTFO as soon as you can. My friend had a roommate sort of like this. They were good friends until they moved in together, then the roommate never cleaned up his shit... did fucking retarded stuff like putting a whole cake in the sink. Eventually, even though he himself had previously been an enthusiastic drug user, he threatened to call the cops if my friend didn't stop using in HIS OWN ROOM. Started blaring his music so loud that with the door shut, it sounded like you were standing right next to the speakers at a party.

I don't know what kind of success you could have by talking to them about it... I don't have much experience with that. If they tried to bitch me out about not taking their bullshit, I would probably just tell them "fuck you" and walk away.
