Forgotten trees of Niagara Escarpment... * 1
    #13480099 -

Come with me on a journey through an old growth forest on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment...

The Eastern White Cedar, able to grow in harsh conditions, spends hundreds of years splitting the limestone rock that was layed down by an ancient sea. Huge chunks are pushed aside to clear a path for their gnarled trunks. Growing for more than a 1000 years, these trees were seedlings durring the middle ages.

Birch, whos age pales in comparison, is also able to grow in the thin soils. They're usual smooth white bark is darkened and cracked with old age, revealing a life of struggle.

Water, unable to drain in the thin soils at the bottom of the escarpments edge, create forested bogs where cedar reveals itself to be capable of handling a new extreme.

Unable to hold firm in the muddy ground, old trees tumble over and expose their roots. Cedar trees keep on growing however, and start twisting their large trunks toward the sky again, in order to reach the sunlight.

This particular white cedar fell over and landed on the stump of another dead fallen birch. It then rooted itself onto the birch, a rich source of rotting nutrients. The old root ball of the cedar dead off, and the trunk left to rot away. This tree now grows exclusively from the birch, 10 feet away from it's original birthplace.

Growing on the fossilized remains of ancient reef inhabitants, this forest reveals a unique environment in the very way it grows. A cog in an ongoing cycle, these ancient trees remind us of the awesome power of nature, and given the time to grow, they can regenerate the most barren landscapes.

To be continued....

Trees are great, and those pics are amazing.

The other day I noticed one of my favorite old trees around here has a white x painted on it. We know what that means.

If you pay attention on walks in the forest you can tell that the trees are judging you.

Trees are a far superior species, they do not judge, they care little for the lives of men.

I've always felt that in some ways, trees are the ultimate pacifist. I'll elaborate  further later if anyone wants to know my reasoning.

I can't help but feel its kind of silly. Its something I used to think a lot about when I was younger.

They remain in their places, wise and old life forms that have witnessed and sensed so much, slowly reacting to a quickly changing landscape. They can be struck by lightning, blown over by high winds, chopped down by other creatures, yet they evolved to remain firmly rooted accepting what the Earth throws at them. In a quickly changing world, trees are wise enough to let go and accept and change only what can be changed with time.

I love trees. I feel so connected to them. Incredible life forms.

I love to climb trees, it was one of my favorite things to do growing up. Maybe I should climb the old gnarled tree they're about to cut and refuse to come down until it's safe.

That's what they may speak or convey to you.

Of course, where you sit in the auditorium affects what you hear. Ask some Dead fans.

Trees give off incredibly powerful vibes when I'm tripping, while generally loving and positive I've come across a single tree that had made me and my friends run away as fast as our bodies could carry us... These could all just be projections of our mind and totally make believe but all three of us simultaneously felt the same, immensely dark, claustrophobic, feeling emanating from the tree and without a word just hauled ass for 5+ minutes.

Just subtle nods between Deadheads.

I was using a live music reference as an analogy that different folks perceive different things depending on different factors, in our case even including the type of "trees". Some thorny, prickly trees look like straight up assholes and beckon my pocket-size chainsaw.
