North Ga Truffles??? Puffball???

Habitat:
balding areas of fescue grass. No trees in the area.
Gills:
not sure
Stem:
little nub, buried in ground.
Cap:
Odd shape, feels firm and looks similar to a potato.


Other information:
These are growing all over in my lawn. The areas they are growing in seem to have thin to no grass.

At first I thought they were some sort of truffle, but I can not find any info on truffles here. I did find a lot of info on pecan truffles in south ga, but there are no pecan trees here and I am in north ga.

Maybe a puffball of some sort.

They are very firm to the touch, pleasant mushroom smell, dense throughout.

Any ideas? Edible?

Excuse the pictures, broke both cameras this year. The interior is very firm to the touch. Some of the insides are pure white.

Looks like Scleroderma cepa - not edible

It does look similar. I cut some more in half, they have white insides. I will research more to see if Scleroderma cepa have same.



Scleroderma cepa, appears to be more uniform. Does this var grow in the southeast US?

The gleba (spore bearing mass) starts off white and turns a purpley colour as it matures

The white stuff is edible, as long as it doesn't get yellow or purple (with spore maturity).

As with other mushrooms, you should be sure the area you're picking in hasn't been treated with dangerous chemicals, as many fungi can absorb and concentrate them.

That is what I would assume, I also thought they were more symmetrical with less nodes.


Scleroderma cepa seems to be a more rounded uniformed species. I am not sure the texture of this species either.

The thick, tough peridium is characteristic of Scleroderma and is what gives it the name
