Abilify..

So talked to my Psych today about some drugs, and he recommended I get off the Zyprexa ( crazy weight-gain, stopped working blah blah ) and try Abilify for the next few weeks see how I like it.

So, In turn, because I stopped the zyprexa, I cannot sleep, so here I am.. with questions.

I was told to take it in the morning. Is this drug supposed to be an Upper?
Am I going to feel a giant burst of energy? Or is it a downer? Can I expect to crash shortly after taking it this morning?

I'm only 5mg by the way. I'm EXTREMELY sensitive to medications..

There was one side effect that made me stop taking it. It's probably the worse I've ever had, too. Watch out for it.

I had that goddamn side effect for MONTHS afterwards. i was scared, I didnt think it would ever go away

Yep. I got akathisia from that and every other antipsychotic. They were prescribing them to me as mood stabilizers and I could not figure out what the fucking unending restless anxiety was, so then they fucking piled clonazepam on top of Abilify & the anti-depressant. Then they figured out it wasn't anxiety, but by that time I was addicted to benzos. So then I was on an SSRI, Abilify, Clonazepam and a _PARKINSON'S_ med called Cogentin for the akathisia. None of it was fucking worth it and I never should have even taken my first anti-depressant. That's what started the real downward spiral. Before that depression was actually manageable.

My wife, however, had it even worse on Abilify. I took her to the ER once for frozen face muscles from Abilify, which they called "extra pyramidal symptoms," then a year later she had acute kidney failure that was so bad they almost put her in surgery for dialysis. She was in the hospital for a week and if we weren't insured, our hospital bill would have cost us $60,000. Luckily the biopsy results came back in time, showed she had acute kidney failure from the medication, and she didn't need dialysis. But she was literally one hour away from going under the knife to have tubes put in her stomach to irrigate her intestines every night for the rest of her life.

What I'm saying is this: Go read some Peter Breggin and get off the headshrink crack. It's poison. Nothing is any better: not Seroquel, not Risperdal, not Invega, no matter how new or how great they say it is, it might as well be fuckin' thorazine and if it's fuckin' thorazine you might as well have a lobotomy. Probably fewer side-effects.

My doc just put me on Klonopin for my stress and depression. Its working quite nicely if I do say so myself. Who gives a fuck if I get addicted and heave to keep taking it every day, I've gotta eat, drink, work, breathe, blink, etc... every day too. What's the harm in one more routine? As long as I'm not having to buy it from shady people in downtown memphis for ridiculous prices, and can consistently get my supply of it on a monthly basis without worry of my dealer going missing or dropping out of the game, I really don't mind.

^ I hear long term use of benzos really effects your mood and cognitive functioning (like memory). My aunt is prescribed valium and she forgets a lot of shit. Every time I take one I feel super dull, like my body is shrouded in fog. I would not like to feel like that everyday. They are great for anxiety though, I can't argue that.

I'm just going to say one thing...

People tried to warn me before I started these meds and I was as flippant as you guys. I know I can't stop you from harming yourself. You're just going to go diving right off that cliff and take your psychiatric meds like good little suicidal maniacs. So do whatever you gotta do. I'm just trying to help. I'm trying to prevent you from making a mistake that will ruin your life. That's all. So kill yourself slowly with poison. See if I fuckin' care. I enjoy human suffering to be honest. I find that most people who get hurt in this life deserve it, because they are just BEGGING for it by doing things like this. I deserved it once. Now you deserve it too. So go poison yourself and come back here in a few years with your horror stories. Maybe someday after you've lived the pain, you can try to stop some other deserving, moronic idiot from ruining their life and they can tell you to "chill out." We all gotta make our own mistakes.

This is no fucking joke. I suggest you take what I am saying very seriously. If you don't heed my words now, you will only remember them when it's too late and you're up against a wall of addiction and brain disabling medication, the likes of which you've never previously imagined.

I stopped taking anti-depressants and now treat my depression with meditation, orange juice, songs like "Brown Eyed Girl", and sitting outside in the happy sunshine.

I treat my depression with medical marijuana, but as you can see, I'm still kind of a man-bitch. At least I don't want to commit suicide anymore. I just need to let people live their lives. :sad:

i really have an issue with the psychiatric fraternity at the moment. i mean they prescribe all these fucking meds and they dont know what the fuck they really do or what its really for. First of all they cant really diagnose a mental problem properly, they just try to pidgeon hole it into what one of their 'conclusive studies' has told them. Peoples minds and problems are too dynamic for these sorts of solutions. :mad2:

I hate to say it but theres no wonderpill that can fix anything instantly. Thats not how things work. People have to solve their own problems in their owns ways - and sometimes medication can supplement that, but still it should only be a part of the treatment.

I honestly feel I should be allowed to sue big pharm for the state those drugs left me in, particularly because they drugged me by incintivizing prescription to doctors in the late 90's and I was basically put on them for no real reason, other than that I didn't like the classroom setting. I was not even twelve when they told me I was bipolar, had some depressive disorder, etc.

This made me essentially an empty shell and from 12-16 I had no social life, no interest in being social, etc. It ruined my high school days, I came out of a drugged haze with no idea how to be. It ruined me, I had few friends.

They tried to put me back on the meds my junior year when I had about a week where I would be vacant-stare-mode most of the time, breaking into short sudden fits of silent tears. Even though they knew my best (and only) friend had committed suicide just days ago.

It's a sick world full of twisted people and fucked up morals.

i mean its not like having a broken arm, you go see the doctor, ok arms broken - put it in a cast. you go to see a psychiatrist, ok we think this may be whats wrong with you but were not sure - eat these. And their basis for recomending medications is based on studies that say "on average most patients responded positively". Fuck averages these are individuals they are dealing with. I said it before but the human mind is literally far too dynamic to be treated adequately at this point. Sometimes they do more harm then good, violating the very oaths they took at the start of their career. :mad2:

Which would almost be fine if they were using real science and not manipulating statistics to their benefit. If a certain person isn't fitting the testing study's goals, they will remove their data from the study. That is why none of these side-effects were documented beforehand. The FDA allows the pharmaceutical companies to basically run their own studies and police themselves. And no one listens to "crazy" people, so....

i have bi-polar disorder and i take abilify to prevent mania and it does a good job of pulling me out of a manic episode.

i take abilify and lemictal everynight....and i hope i never have another manic episode. i was hospitalized for a month during my last bout of mania. it was a horrifying experience.

the only side effect i've noticed is weight gain. and i'm not sure that is entirely attributable to the drug.
