I read the book(yes, BOOK. Tolkien hated the idea of a trilogy but was forced to do so by the publishers) before the films came out. Given the scope of the project they did a really good job; It couldve been a real disaster.

I need to get the blu rays, havent seen em yet

I'm watching 3rd one right now.

The books rocked my world as a kid. I want to check out the Silmarillion but last time I looked at it in the library it totally boggled my mind.

I had no idea Tolkien didn't want to make a trilogy. Weird!

I felt the same way about the Silmarillion when I was in high school:lol:

But eventually I read it and I was completely blown away. It's too bad Christopher Tolkien holds the rights and will not give them up for anything. The film would be so goddamn epic.. holy shit. Gods duking it out, gigantic battles that make the wars in LotR look like small skirmishes. it would be amazing.

Peter Jackson really wants to do it but, it'll never happen

I read these books for the first time in high school (in the mid 80s!).  Anyhow, technically they aren't a trilogy but six books in three volumes.  Whatever that makes.  But it's a damned good story.  The movies were awesome too.

If you want to read LOTR please go out an get an earlier edition.
I've read the one with the movie cover on it and I've read one from the 80's. The earlier one is 10 times better.

Text isn't the same?

I've worn out 3 or four sets of the books and it's time for more is why I ask.

Oh, and the audiobooks are really good if you like audiobooks.  The guy who reads does an excellent job.

I'm pretty glad Peter Jackson won't get his hands on Silmarillion.

A) I appreciate his work on the movies, but overall I was not a huge fan of them, particularly the 2nd and 3rd.

B) The subject matter in the Silmarillion would be ruined by being put into movie-form, for me at least.  There are gods, immortals, huge battles and conflicts transpiring over hundreds and thousands of years, and too many stories to reasonably be able to tell in one or several feature length films...I just think it's better left to the individual's imagination than to a big production company.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I understand.  I drive quite a bit so they keep my occupied.  It's safer than my old routine - dosing for the long drives (not smart).

I wouldn't always agree, but in this case I'm 100% with you. The imagination is a wonderful thing.

The Silmarillion is more faux history textbook than novel but you could certainly carve several movies out of it.

It would be nice to have some of the Silmarillion material.
It could provide subjects for several straight-to-DVD movies that would make the studio some side money.
Story of Beren and Luthien maybe.

silmarillion needs to be a minimum 24 episode TV series with a billion dollar budget.  only way it'll work.  at least within the next 10 years anyway.
