The Fake Virgin Trend: Is Hymen Restoration a Woman's Right?

Cultural views of purity are pushing girls in China to re-virginize themselves with a minor surgical procedure known as hymen restoration.

The Washington Post reported on the rise of surgeries and spoke with Zhou Hong, a physician and director of gynecology at the Beijing Wuzhou Women's Hospital.

Zhou said, "We can fix it so everything is perfect, so the men can believe they are marrying virgins."

She averages 20 hymen restorations a month, and the numbers are climbing.

She said of the country's sacred view of virginity. "I don't agree with this value... It's unfair to the women. The men are not virgins. But we can't change this male-privileged society."

The surgery isn't confined to China. It's performed in the U.S., Europe and many Arab countries.

Why are girls feeling pressure to have this medically unnecessary elective procedure?

A paper titled "Hymen Reconstruction: Ethical and Legal Issues" published in The International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, reported:

In cultures prizing unmarried women's virginity, premarital rupture may shame a woman, and her family. Women, including brides whose virginity is not proven at marriage, face humiliation, ostracism, divorce, and violence—at the extreme, “honor” killing."

Some women, for whom hymen reconstruction isn't an option, seek artificial hymen kits.

Reported by the Associated Press in 2009, "The Artificial Virginity Hymen kit, distributed by the Chinese company Gigimo, costs about $30... The product leaks a blood-like substance when inserted and broken. Gigimo advertises shipping to every Arab country."

"Hymen Reconstruction: Ethical and Legal Issues" reports that gynecologists are divided on the surgery:

Gynecologists may oppose hymen reconstruction on grounds that it is deceptive, not medically required, or that the requirement of evidence of virginity discriminates against women... Gynecologists may justify the procedure, however, as serving health, which includes patients' mental and social well-being and women's human rights to control their own bodies.

Regardless of the reasons for and against hymen reconstruction, requests for the surgery are likely to keep rising.

Tis true. I believe breast augmentations are among the most common surgical procedures in the US. However, we should create public education campaigns to inform them there is now a better way to spend that money.

The point is drastic measures we take to improve our self-image are influenced by our environment to the point where our minds become one-dimensional. Whether its hymen restoration in China, or stretched lobes in northern Thailand, these aren't seen as body modifications or preferences, rather a tight pussy is genuinely "better". Institutions like religion or media giants are further capable of rationalizing the decisions.

Indeed, however deception is always used at the expense of the second party. I like women who are honest and open. However, hymen restoration sounds great for one night stands or when the wife's vag starts to fall apart, lol
