Memphis grandmother charged with growing pot in driveway

MEMPHIS, TN - Police said they found four marijuana plants growing in plain view in the driveway of a house in the 1300 block of Bryan.

The truly surprising news for many neighbors is that 65-year-old grandmother Helen Franklin was the person charged with planting the pot.

"I was just surprised, you know" said neighbor James Fields.  "Didn't know no weed was down there."

Police were actually looking for another suspect in the neighborhood when they happened upon the pot early Wednesday morning.

According to court records, an officer asked Franklin if she knew what the potted plant was.

"Yes, reefer, I planted it," she replied.

Franklin's son-in-law told an Action News 5 crew he was going to get his wife when we asked him about Franklin's green thumb, but neither returned.

Neighbors said Franklin was recently hospitalized.  However, they do not know whether she used the marijuana for medical purposes.

"Cause she's quiet, very quiet," said neighbor Jean Parrish.  "Stays to herself."

"She come over here to ask to use the phone, that's it," said Virgil Parrish.

Some wonder if Franklin may be covering for someone else's crime since breaking the law is totally out of character.

"I ain't never known her but to do the right thing," said neighbor James Fields.  "I don't know nothing bad."

Franklin was booked in the Shelby County Jail and charged with Manufacture/Deliver/Sell a Controlled Substance. Bond was set at $5,000.

Anyone who think's its harmless and just a plant and wouldn't think twice about growing a plant in a pot outside.

If it`s 'out of character' for her and been recently in the hospital, I would say A) someone told her herb would help with her glaucoma, etc and she started her own B) she has some dementia going and would likely walk around in her underwear like it`s no big thing, or C)she has some serious medical bills due and social security check doesn`t go far...


Poor thing....$5K bond. In better financial times I`d try to help her out.

seriously how long can stuff like this go on? they are putting a 65 year old grandmother in jail because she had a plant. jail is where dangerous and violent people belong. this woman is obviously niether. i wonder when people will wake up

Outrage!  The woman hurt no one and gets a $5k bond!  what, do they think she's a flight risk?

We should try to raise her bond.  I've got $5 one it (sorry Im poor)  My grandparents could use the herb, but are way too old fashioned.  If gramma planted some herb and landed in jail, I would ask all of you to help her out.  Seriously, I got the first $5.  Someone get the info for the family so I can send it.
