Gunmen Kill 19 at Drug Rehabilitation Center in Northern Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Getting treatment for drug addiction has become a dangerous activity in the northern state of Chihuahua, where gunmen allied with drug cartels have staged numerous attacks on rehabilitation centers, including a particularly vicious massacre on Thursday night that left 19 men dead, the authorities said Friday.

At least two dozen assailants raided the Faith and Life Center in Chihuahua city just before 11 p.m., the authorities said. After rousting the patients and ordering them to lie face down, the gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons, killing 19 people and wounding at least 4 others, according to the police and news accounts from the scene. The authorities recovered 184 bullet casings, the newspaper El Universal reported.

And in Ciudad Madero, a city in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, the bullet-riddled bodies of 18 men and 2 women were found Friday in five different parts of the city, The Associated Press reported. The attack on Thursday at the rehabilitation center was not the first such attack. The night before, one man was killed and another was wounded at a rehabilitation center in Ciudad Juárez, a troubled border city in Chihuahua State.

Last September, at another rehab center in the city, within sight of the United States-Mexico border, 17 young men were killed by multiple gunmen, who managed to escape into the night.

The police have attributed those attacks and others to rival drug gangs seeking to wipe out opponents who are undergoing treatment for addictions. Patients are usually locked inside the centers to keep them away from the streets, making them particularly vulnerable to attacks.

President Felipe Calderón, in South Africa for the opening of the World Cup, issued a statement condemning the attack. “These are outrageous acts that reinforce the conviction of the need to use the full force of the law against criminals that perform these barbaric acts,” he said.

The killers left behind a statement of their own. “This is what happens to pigs, rats, killers, kidnappers, rapists,” it said.

I think these guys went inside looking for a snitch,or maybe someone that owed money.I don't think these guys would go inside and kill just because the people getting treatment don't want to use their drugs anymore.

So these 56 drug addicts owed money or were rats?

But really,why would these guys kill drug addicts?Their has to be some motive behind it.The government don't care if they are killing addicts,because then they don't have to pay for their stay there.

No motive eh?

These were drug addicts-- probably some former customers-- but they were now in a drug rehabilitation centre, one can only assume so that they can stop their drug addictions. What's a good way to make sure no one else gets any ideas of quitting the drugs you sell? Kill a whole bunch that already have-- that sure sends a message.

Motive enough?



Or how about this, perhaps the rehab centre is taking too strong an anti-drug role in the community-- and so they go in their guns blazing to send them the message that their efforts in ridding the community of drug addiction is much appreciated. Probably not gonna see that rehab centre stick around for too much longer.

Is that acceptable motive?

This is how dumb cartel members are.They kill,and bring all kind of attention to themselves.It seems to me if I were a cartel leader I would lay low to get my drugs across the border.Because making attention to themselves is only going to cost them more in the long run,and maybe even their lives.

I kinda like how they play this chess game with the governments, but killing the innocent people is not cool in any way.

I have no problem with people wanting to fight and die for a cause, even if that cause is wrong or somewhat stupid. Some people live to fight and die by making a hobby out of war and I have no problem with this, just leave the innocent people out of it.

Every last one of them? I find that hard to believe.

There may have been a handful of people that were snitches, there definitely was innocent lives taken.

these guys dont give a fuck about attention, they are brutal and will kill anyone in their way.they are stronger than the entire nations army there and have the majority of the police force on their side, either by turning their backs to the dealings or helping transport, etc.any police officer who doesnt comply with the cartel, is decapitated and his head delivered to his wife doorstep.then her and the whole family is raped,  killed and burned alive while the corrupt officials watch.

the drug cartel is insane and brutal.they run many parts of mexico, and nothing short of our military going in and intervening will ever stop them.

Yea, from what I hear the Mexican government essentially lost control of most of northern Mexico to the cartels upon officially declaring 'war' on them and bringing in the army.
