alder chips

I'm having a hard time getting them, which is ironic, living in southern Oregon. However, I'm thinking of approaching an alder mill to buy a large quantity. They have shit-tons of skinny alders in their yard, and when I approached them years ago to buy some chips they had laying around, I was treated like a peon, but that's beside the story...
Question is, if I buy a large quantity, how should I store it through winter? Previously, I had left the chips in piles in the backyard and put them in cheap garbage cans... but they seemed to get mildew on them. This is just an option I want to try before I approach a guy with a chipper to start grinding up fresh alder (which I'm not sure where to get appropriately without sneaking around in the forests...) And, finally, on a related question: does anyone know a retailer in Oregon who sells Ecoburn? And if none of this works, praise be to the Shroomery threads... I'll just go looking for phone books.

You want to leave sawdust or chips covered under a roof, but not a tarp. It's important for them to be in open air to dry completely out for storage. If they're stored damp, they'll grow mold and be ruined. If the mill has Alder sawdust available, you can skip the chips and just use sawdust. I found that most molds were forming on the chips, so in my farm I switched to sawdust-only blocks. You won't get as many flushes, but you'll get more mushrooms from the first two flushes.
