Comfortis flea control for dogs.
    #12576098 -

So my mom and I went to the vet because she wanted me to get some flea control for my dog.  He usually uses Frontline, which works really well, even beyond a month, but my mom wanted me to get 'Comfortis' a type of flea control that is in pill form.  The dog eats it and it is supposed to start killing fleas immediately.

The whole idea just seemed sketchy and dangerous to me.  A pesticide that dogs consume?  That basically means that the dog is eating poison and somehow it kills the fleas on their skin.  I even questioned the lady at the vet office, asking her how this could possibly be safe for dogs to consume when it's a poison designed to kill fleas.  She looked at me like I was a moron and told me that it works and that it's been tested to be safe.  I kept questioning her but my mom kept saying, "give it a try."

So I give my dog the pill like the instructions say, with food.  My dog eats a raw food diet (raw chicken usually) and thrives on it, so I gave him his usual evening meal and after he eats it I offer him the pill.  He immediately spits it out.  I kept trying to give it to him, but he didn't want it, even though the pill is supposed to have a "juicy beef flavor."  Whatever, my dog thought from the beginning that the pill tasted like shit, but eventually, probably wanting to please me, he ate it.

Fast forward 30 minutes, and my dog is now lurching around my room, vomiting everywhere.  He NEVER vomits, is usually in perfect health, so I am alarmed.  I'm like "WTF SHIT" and try to guide him downstairs at least to the tile floor, and then outside.  He gets downstairs and starts puking again, half-digested raw chicken.  I am seriously so grossed out by this point, and incredibly angry that I allowed my mother and the stupid nurse at the vet to talk me into giving my dog poison, obviously something that he should not have in his body.

I took him outside and then proceeded to clean the carpets.

So yeah, Comfortis flea control for dogs?   It's pure poison and I hope my dog feels better soon.

I just wanted to bash this form of flea control and get the word out not to use it.

Now I have to get to bed, he seems to be doing better now, he's sleeping next to me.

That doesn't even sound right at all.  We use frontline. And so does the vet we use.
Your poor dog! I even feel bad when we have to give ours shots. I can't imagine seeing her throw up everywhere

The funniest part is, this stuff is used on produce that can then be sold as organic.

That is that dogs normal diet silly, although good attempt, I guess.

Learn to read.  That's his NORMAL DIET that he's been eating for over 5 years, and he NEVER VOMITS.  The Comfortis in his system made him puke everywhere.

normal or not I've never heard of raw chicken being safe to feed to anything. salmonella can affect animals the exact same way it affects humans, causing food poison.  salmonella poisoning has symptoms exactly like what you listed your dog experiencing.  just cause the other times he never got screwed up from it doesn't mean this time it was the drug. what the vet said is right, its been tested and shown safe. drugs, even drugs for humans, have side effects. sometimes those side effects are nastier than the symptoms the drug is designed to alleviate. its up to the person taking the drug (or their guardian) to decide if the side-effects are worth it.

that being said, I'm not by any means saying that what happened wasn't truly an adverse side effect to the drug. I have a co-worker that was just complaining about one of the anti-flea drugs (can't remember which specific one) that makes her dog sick (shits, throwing up, etc) for 2-3 days every time she gives it to him. she's only given him the medicine twice. first time just thought it was the dog being a dog and just got sick, he's a pup so he still gets sick sometimes. now she won't give it to him ever since he got sick the second time too.  like I said, can't remember the exact med but its not one of the "traditional" medicines thats been around for a while; its one of the newer ones I hadn't heard of.

btw, nowhere in your story did it say that raw chicken is his "normal" diet. I shouldn't be expected to assume it is either, most people don't feed their dogs raw chicken. not passing judgement on what you feed your dog, thats your perogative. just saying don't tell me to learn how to read until you learn how to properly tell a story.

You need to do some research on the natural diet of dogs in addition to reading comprehension.  I said this in my post:

Quote:
My dog eats a raw food diet (raw chicken usually) and thrives on it, so I gave him his usual evening meal

Someone with intelligence could extrapolate that this means it is his "normal diet" considering that I feel him this usually. But whatever, that is beside the point.

What do you think canines ate before Kibbles n Bits and all those other foods mankind crafted filled with wheat and other filler?  They ate RAW MEAT.  Grains aren't healthy for dogs and a raw food diet for dogs is EXTREMELY healthy.  My dog has never gotten poisoning from his food, EVER, in five years, and the only new variable was this strange poisonous pill that he DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO CONSUME.  He knew it was bad for him, I should have listened to my dog.

I don't mean to get testy but you are drawing conclusions on something you know nothing about.  I researched the raw food diet for YEARS before I ever got a dog that I put on it and my vet agrees with me that my dog is in a superior state of health and has no problems with my feeding program.

As for the pesticide flea pill being "healthy" and "safe" yeah right, I can't believe you would believe that someone SELLING A PILL could be credible because just because a COMPANY says something is safe for consumption does not mean it is, especially if the motive is to make $$.

My two dachshund and shih-tzu have always eaten raw meat, beef and chicken. I usually just buy a cheap package of beef neck bones and just give them one every morning.

I've never had a vet bill.

Edit: To stay on topic, I use frontline and wouldn't give that pill to me dogs.

Yep, it's Frontline all the way for me now, unless I can find a more natural method.  Someone recommended garlic to beat fleas?

I'm glad to see that your animals eat a raw food diet as well.  It's becoming more common because people are catching on.  I prefer to feed my dog as close to his wild diet as possible and he loves it.
