group project evaluation
    #12432639 -

let's say you're working on a group project with 2 other people.

1 of them is awesome, she pays attention in class and does her share of the work well. the other guy is pleasant, but is a complete social loafer. he misses meetings, makes the rest of the group come to his place to work, and everything he does pretty much has to be redone by you or the other member.

now you finish your project, and everything goes really well. the professor hands out a group evaluation form.

do you:
1) bitch about the group member who did not help and give him a low score
2) suck it up, give everyone a good score

it seems natural to pick the first choice, but here's the problem: it's your word against his. you know that the slacker is going to say that he did a bunch of work and rate himself high. and if the other group member decides to just rate everyone the same, then you look like a whiny bitch to the professor.

what do the wise posters of SA think?

Can you speak privately to the other person in your group (the one who did well)? Then you both could put down that the guy didn't do shit.

The professor won't think you're a whiny bitch.

I've been on the other side of this equation many times - I have my students grade each other. It's usually pretty obvious to me when someone is telling the truth about such things, because no one has a reason to lie (usually).

The professor set this responsibility for you to be honest, not to test you to see who is the "whiny bitch". Adults think about these things much differently than adolescent aged people. I always reward the people who are honest with me about things. Honesty is the most important trait in an individual. Be sure that the person is aware of your displeasure though. Tell them directly that they need to do more work, or if you want to be less confrontational, outline specifically what their obligations to the group are. Then, when you write your evaluation, tell the professor that person X did not fulfill certain obligations.

grad student, eh? well thanks for the reply, i guess honesty is best. this isn't actually something that's happening right now. the situation occurred last winter quarter. i'm taking a class in the same room right now though, and the professor i had is in there right before my class. it was just a random thought i had.
