George Orwell's 1984

Once you read that book you will never look at the way our world's governments treat us the same again... It's where that saying "Big Brother is Watching" came from...

orwell was a good socialist, too

For some years past I have managed to make the capitalist class pay me several pounds a week for writing books against capitalism. But I do not delude myself that this state of affairs is going to last forever ... the only régime which, in the long run, will dare to permit freedom of speech is a Socialist régime

best book of all time. must read for all humans.

Agreed.  Great book, glad to see it mentioned here already, as I was going to list it myself!

Brave New World is more entertaining, better written and far more pertinent and poignant as it concerns the social landscape.  It's not so much that "Big Brother" is controlling or totalitarian - it's that it doesn't have to be because society is so dumbed down and oriented towards titillation, sexuality, banality.

i always liked 1984 better.. i know Brave New World is an important book, i mean the ideas within the story are ahead of their time, but Huxley's writing style is just too boring for  me. Orwell simplified things beautifully, yet had cohesive themes throughout the story that were revolutionary for a work of fiction. 1984 was just way more enjoyable for me to read.

Sometimes I wonder if those sorts of books are just self fulfilling prophecies waiting to happen.
It only manifests as someone visualized.

interesting.. so if enough people collectively envision something it manifests itself?

if that's true, it begs the question-
what are the things we're creating and evolving now that will manifest themselves in our future?

what's the most popular new book of our time? da vinci code?

I think that Michiu guy in Envix's sig is one of our preeminate "futurists" right now.

He has a brighter vision; but I could imagine someone's darker vision manifesting just as easily....

I'm confused as to what makes a book dangerous? The information contained within? Was Ray Bradbury onto something in Fahrenheit 451? I know the concept came up in 1984 too but I really don't get it.
