Not sure what "top secret" means exactly.

For a "level 5" clearance, what you will do is have is provide the addresses of everywhere you have lived for the last 7 years along with the name of an associate that can vouch for that.

Employment history will also be collected.

Then you need to list 3-4 "close friends".  These individuals will get a survey in the mail basically asking:  "is this guy an asshole and/or threat".  After all that is done you'll be visited by a "Special agent" to confirm and verify.

If you are worried: ask.  The government has to play by all sorts of affirmative action, anti-discrimination, equal opportunity rules.  You are well within your rights to ask what they'll be asking and looking for.

Hmmm well that sure doesn't sound too bad. The person I spoke to about this basically said "if you have done drugs, they WILL KNOW". He also indicated that they would use the references you supply to try and reach contacts you have made that you may not want the government to know about.

Any specific tips about drug use (I smoke occasionally now but would quit well before things get serious), or other issues (shady friends)?

Will they scour every city I've lived in looking for dirt? Talk to old teachers/employers/other people without telling me? Sift through the internet looking for any trace of deviance?
