i mean the bastards. they were some of the most shallow characters he's ever created. they had no backstory. no motivation for all of their brutality. even the fact that they were jews wasn't really hashed out. it's just like "OK GUYS WE GON KILL US SOME NAZIS AND DRINK BREWSKIES OKAY" that's the plot. actually, i think bradd pitt said those exact words.

side note: i just remembered the bar scene though where they were playing cards. that was awesome.

I totally disagree - When it comes to Nazis, what backstory do you really need for a bunch of jews in the military to be on a mission to kill and scalp nazis? Thats a pretty badass story right there.

Its fucking NAZIS dude - really

ive heard people say they have a problem with this. i think one of the biggest reasons for this problem has to do with the title and the marketing campaign.. it didnt have much to do with the Basterds at all. it seemed like the title and marketing were focusing entirely on "killin' natzis"

however, if you watch it and try to keep in mind how one would attempt to market this film, youd see that it could have been done a million different ways. they had to focus on one thing rather than try and tie in 6 different very involved plot lines into a 2 min trailer.

the title could have been The Adventures of Hans Landa and would have probably been more appropriate..

yeah.. i think about film wayyy too much

i like how he pronounces "nazi"
something like "alright boys, yadda yadda, i'm in the business of killing nazis"
like the way he says it, nazi would rhyme with patsy
like, did people pronounce nazi that way? was it common?
or does that just reflect Aldo's midwest upbringing?
like the type of folks who would say nazi like nazi are the same type of folks who say 'merica instead of America.
that distinct, cutting sound to his pronunciation of 'nazi' is a perfect compliment to the overall tone of the movie.
it's pretty cool, that's all i'm saying :crankey:

It was ok, but it basically seemed like it was just made to make jews feel better about what actually happened. And of course all those people who think that all nazi's were just evil and deserved to be tortured. The truth is that many people at the time had no choice, but to just follow orders. Speaking out and disagreeing with the nazi guidlines would likley result in severe punishment.

For the most part they were just being soldiers and following orders for their nation just like any other countries soldiers would do.

I loved it, the dialogue is what did it for me.  Christoph Waltz was fuckin great as well
3rd highest in oscar nominations, only 2 are above it which are avatar and hurt locker(LOL, this movie?  what a joke.  It was alright but one nom is fucking pushing it).

1. Best Picture
2. Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz)
3. Cinematography
4. Directing
5. Film Editing
6. Original Screenplay
7. Best Sound
8. Best Sound Effects Editing

Good luck in 14 days guys! :tarantino:

Just watched it.
I enjoyed the experience, but I wouldn't chalk it up as one of my favorites.
I wouldn't pay for the DVD, but I'll watch the torrent with a smile on me face.

I never expected another good tarantino flick after I saw Death-proof..

But he totally redeemed himself, in a huge way, with da Basterds.
