GM crop disaster
    #1178390 -

Incredible. Our government is so enslaved to the corporations that it willingly pollutes our countryside with their poison in the hope of boosting their profit levels. As Bill Hicks said: " What kinda fuckin reagan wet-dream is this world man?"

Genetically modified crops being grown in Britain are likely to have cross-pollinated with ordinary crops and weeds, government research has shown.
GM oilseed rape so readily cross pollinates it is unlikely that GM crops could be grown in Britain without contaminating all oilseed varieties, according to the research.

The National Institute for Agricultural Botany at Cambridge says current safety margins of 50 metres between GM crops and normal crops are not acceptable. Any normal crops being grown for seed or to be labelled organic would be rendered unfit for market because of contamination, and the research evidence shows that cross-pollination over large distances is possible.

Up to 48% of the weed wild turnip growing in the GM crops had swapped genes with its cultivated relative, making it resistant to weedkiller, the researchers found. Because seed is spilt at harvest new GM plants grow in the next crops, leading to further dangers of cross-contamination.

The government has not yet published the results of the research in full, but put a summary on its website on Christmas Eve where it was spotted by Friends of the Earth.

Pete Riley, from FoE, said: "This raises serious doubts about whether we can grow GM crops in this country and still give farmers the option of growing non-GM crops and organic produce. The fact is that this level of cross-pollination between crops means it is only a matter of time before everything in the UK becomes contaminated."

It's a pity that the altered genetics have crossed over to wild food plants. No one knows what the outcome will be.

Your commentary about the gov being a slave to corporations is really out of place though. Experiments in growing super food go awr and you blame the gov. Go blame it for creating killer bees too. That's another cross breeding related out of control accident, but the gov didn't do that either.

It's more than a pity.

Corporations like aventis provided the seed and played an enormous part in the trials. They are anxious to create other markets for their poison. They are the ones who are going to make the profit out of this.

Someone must provide the seed for the trials. Who better than the inventors? Of course they want to expand their markets, I hope they make it. If their seeds were poison no one would buy them. If they weren't more productive no one would buy them. It sounds like they're working on super plants to grow more food in less land and feed more people in a more cost effective manner than is currently available. If they work out their polonating problems it sounds like everyone (the company, farmers, and consumers) wins.

I hope they make it

At the expense of polluting every scrap of countryside in the UK?

and feed more people

The last thing on their minds is feeding more people. There's more than enough food in the world as it is. Western corporations forcing Africa to grow crops for export is the problem, not a lack of food. The only thing Monsanto are interested in is forcing their poison down everyones throats regardless of what effect it has on the environment or people's health. If you want your kids to choke down GM food then good for you. I don't want mine going within a thousand miles of it.

Of course not. What a silly thing to suggest. I said I hope they work out their pollon problems.

The rest of your comments doesn't need a rebuttal. Anyone reading it should see the errors in your judgment.

The problem is it's already happening. Pollen spreads in the wind, the rogue genes are out there. It's anyones guess what'll happen now. And bear in mind that these crops have been planted all over america contaminating the countryside.

Monsanto arn't doing this to feed the hungry - only a complete moron could believe that.

If it was discovered that a gene for a specific protein prevented cancer, it only worked if the protein was produced endogenously inside the organism, would you have a problem inserting the gene into humans?

After many decades of reliable independent publicly available research and studies into other health effects I would be glad to see any positive use of GM. There is none at the moment.

We are being forced to eat GM with no idea what effect it has on human health, purely because Monsanto will make enormous short-term profits from it.
