Sudden Loss of Important Files!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!
    #11607280 -

So I'm dicking around on the net the other day.
And I've got multiple tabs open.
So I'm doing pornography research, not downloading a million things.
And certainly not skipping a virus check. Besides most of my porn comes from PureTnA.com

I'm sleuthing, and viewing mainly.

Suddenly I get a message saying, something or other tried to write to a read only whatever.

Computer crashes. Download folder is pretty much nuked. A few pics, and a few torrent files left. Nothing else. Which in a way is a good thing, because that was a bandaid that I clearly needed some help pulling off.

But, the reason I am quite depressed, and feeling really stupid, is that I lost something of GREAT IMPORTANCE to me personally.
I have a file, where I jot down ideas for writing articles, and videos etc.
Something that happens to be very important to me personally, and it's gone.

Now I think because I suddenly don't have GIGS of free space, that the download folder files, and this one TXT file, is still three, somewhere on the computer.
But where?

I've downloaded two data recovery programs.
And I've tried one. But boy, choosing to include deleted files!? WOW
I'll have to try that again without them included.
I thought my computer was going to crash going through all that shit!

Has this shit ever happened to any of you?
What did you lose?
I'm going to make backups weekly now.
If I ever lost everything, that matters, writings, and videos.
I would go back to my spare HD to recover what I could.

But as odd as it sounds. For someone that's as indecisive, and On and Off like myself. That file was an anchor. It kept all those great little ideas in one spot.
And I could use it to plot a safe course towards making a new idea into something of value. Without it, I'm starting fresh.
But I've lost (IMHO) over 100 GREAT ideas.

And I've got to say, sure it's just DATA.
But god dammit, it's MY DATA. Not porn, or pics from the net.
Or The Daily Show. It's mine.
And now it might be gone forever.
Gotta say, it's the worst thing that's happened to me in months.
Which I'm sure by world standards makes my life awesome.
But god dammit does it ever suck. :nonono:

Running a large powerful magnet over you hard drive might help jolt all the bits back into an organized state...kind of like shaking a box of cereal.

jk, don't do that.

Ok do a search for a file recovery program. you might even have to pay for a good one but most of them work look on Hirens disk I think there is a good one there go HERE look around and you will find a program that will work. REMEMBER "Don't Panic" and know where your towel is.

oops here is the the page you have to digg deep on the other link. Just a note even if you turn off your computer those files will still be there even if they a one on write over. i have recovered files from hard drives that have had a hard format with no problems just have to have the right software tools and a little know how.

Hey, at least you only lost a list of unrealized ideas, as opposed to years of finished and in progress work, which is what happened to me, TWICE in the past 5 years(music).

I have quadruple backups of shit now and I'm interested in finding some online service or something to do real time live backups, anyone know of a good one?

And now you're unencumbered by your list, which surely must have been a source of gravity in some way that you can do without.  My advice now would be instead of starting another list, DO the next list worthy thing that you find rolling around in your head.  Just start writing it, or editing it down, making a draft, sketching it out, whatever.  Then start making short term lists of things to do to develop, on a daily or session basis, those sketches or drafts or blocks of work.  That's what I've been doing with music for the past year or so and it's been a good process.

Oh no way! :o
Maybe.

I did have one of their tabs open.
FUCK. But I was checking out a lot of shit.
And porn.
I wasn't whacking it and browsing around all southpark style "Now we've gotta get some Brazilian fart porn in there"

Anyway. I'm going to try a few different programs.

Does ANYONE have programs that WORK WELL?
Any you would rave about?

BACKUP, resize the windows partition, create a new partition with something like ext3. use the new partition for storage.

windows can be pretty flakey at times. best to have it on a seperate partition so you keep all your info if something goes wrong and you need to reinstall.

still, back it up. thats not going to help if the HD dies.

if its just text files youre storing then you might like dropbox.

That's actually really well thought out advice.
And it seems as though you've been through this(music wise)

And if you didn't mention that I'd assume you have.

It's funny, I've been in this state where I feel as though my job is meaningless(it is) and I can't wait to escape it for school. And I have, for some time been feeling like, oh shit, another day, try and get something done.
I have this massive creative drive. Not as though I'm saying all of my ideas have universal appeal, this is not a roundabout way of saying Gee, I'm great.

I'm not. I'm indescive. And constantly changing my mind, and constantly bouncing from one idea to another.

I took the famous Carl Jung(developed? from his work, right?) personality test.
WOW. FUCKING WOW. To a Tee.
EVERYTHING. I'm reading through and saying wow that is me. Big smiles.
Fascinated, and overjoyed with myself.
Then comes all the negative traits.
WOW. Holy fuck, that's almost MORE accurate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Jung

I'm this one! http://www.personalitypage.com/ENFP.html
"The Inspirer" But I've also scored as, "the idealist"
The only difference that's immediately noticeable is one is extroverted, the other introverted, which for me, IMO, literally can change from month to month.

By the way. I suggest you take this if you haven't already.
You can really learn something about yourself.
Whether you like the answers or not is a whole other story.

ditch windows. install linux.

im the same way. ive been using linux for about 5 years now and im still interested. if i change my mind about what i want or want to create something different then i have, litterally, limitless possiblities at my finger tips.

it def helps me scratch an itch and it makes computers really fun.. something that you just dont get using windows or osx.

I feel zero sympathy for those who do not have back-ups of their data. Zero.

Did I say zero yet? Oh yeah. Zero.

ZERO!

1) download the most recent knoppix iso and burn it to CD.

Use another computer for this because you don't want to overwrite the data if its been deleted.  Do not use the computer with the important data on it at all unless you have booted into knoppix.

2) Log in, su to root, look at dmesg to find which device your hard drive is.  For this example we will assume that its /dev/hda (which is likely)

3) grep -i "A string that is only in that file" /dev/hda

It will search through the whole drive, including swap space and deleted files to see if the data is still there.

If you are able to see that it exists, use grep -A, -B, etc to get the lines above and below the key words that you specified.  Paste that into a word processor, clean up the formatting, and you have your document back, if its still there.

There are also windows tools that will do the same thing.  Years ago I used to use Norton Utilities to hex edit a whole drive and search for certain strings.  Windows sucks though and you don't want to be downloading tools to this machine because its likely that your data is still there but the space is marked free.
