ahhh shit.. international traveler advice?

man... i'm worried.  i'm pretty sure i'm gonna get a hefty fine when i leave europe.  i never did get a visa.  didn't really think about it before leaving, didn't really have a chance to while on the farm, and now i'm already a month beyond the allowed stay in the schengen for people without visas. 

hell, i didn't even know about the schengen until just now, when i visited the american embassy to ask some questions.  before coming on this trip, people told me all you have to do is leave the country for a bit and your allowed stay starts over.  but they were totally wrong.  you're allowed only a combined time spent of ninety days over a six month period in all of the countries of the schengen.

so i'm going to write the foreign minister of CZ and request a combined visa D + C, for long-term stay under the basis of study and volunteer work.  but i'm worried that they won't look too kindly upon the fact that i've already been here beyond my allowed stay.  anyone know if i can pop out of the schengen for 3 months and then come back?  i could go spend a few months in/around croatia, bosnia, montenegro, etc.  but i'm worried about crossing the border here.  would i get fined at the border?

fuck man..  worse comes to worst, say i stay a full year illegally.  what kinda fine am i looking at?

Most certainly not.

I've known a few Croations and Bosnians (talk about big families) and they've all pretty much said that the worst thing to happen in the US is better than the best thing to happen in (Croatia / Bosnia).

Although not exactly politically stable, these countries/regions can be traveled relatively safely. A friend of mine has spent a lot of time in the more unstable/volatile parts of central Europe, especially Kosovo, and has experienced very little personal danger. Things apparently got a bit exciting when he was in Georgia when the shit hit the fan there last year, but that's a different story and a different region altogether.

Especially Croatia is considered a very fine place for spending vacations and has been enjoying a substantial rise in tourism over the last decade or so. It is also more or less free of the political tension that is present in the other ex-Yougoslavian countries.

FUCK THAT!!! why would you ever go to Bosnia?

Let me tell you, please don't go...I urge you not to go...but if you do, then good luck. I spent a good chunk of my childhood fighting in that hell during the civil war. And to my knowledge its still rather unsafe. Just think and try learning about places before you begin country-hopping.

why go there?  did you not read my thread?  i need to spend 3 full months outside of the Schengen or else i'll be fined some absurd amount [i've heard up to 1000euros] and most likely deported.

i didn't really get the impression that croatia was really that bad.  i mean, i know it's got a fairly recent history of war, but it seems to be the hotspot tourist destination of many europeans.  And, i'm hoping i'd be couchsurfing around these areas a fair amount, which would almost always guarantee a safe place to stay.

hell, i had been planning on going south this winter anyway.  i had been thinking the mediterranean, but now it seems the adriatic would make more sense for me, seeing as how greece and italy are definitely both part of the Schengen.

i'm really worried that if i email the ministry of foreign affairs of CZ and fill them in on the details of my situation, they'll issue deportation orders immediately.  i don't want my trip to end just like that because i failed to follow the proper bureaucratic procedures.  fuck that.  i'd rather have an adventure with an element of danger than go home early with my head hung low.

oh shit.  so i'm doing some reading on this Schengen nonsense and visas and whatnot, trying to figure out what kinda fine i'm looking at.  and i find out that the UK is not part of the Schengen.  so if i want a safer alternative, i suppose i could seek refuge in the UK for a couple months. 

although... i was really liking the idea of exploring islands in the adriatic.
