Changing outdated money...
    #11390793 - 11/05/09 01:07 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I'm in Europe right now and will be going home in a month, i have stumbled upon a 500leva(would be appx $350) bill that they no longer use here.  Said bill was produced in 1993, my question to you is do you think if i brought it back to the states i could exchange it at my bank?  Would i get in trouble for trying to pull a fast one?
I dont know that my bank would take this type of currency to begin with but i mean its only 16 years old *shrugs*

That money is still legal tender in Bulgaria, and you should be able to exchange it

Edit: As far as I know

It's up to them really.  They have no obligation to change anything...

I would call your bank and ask if they will change that currency. A lot of banks don't actually handle their own currency exchange, but actually have an independent contractor handle the transactions behind the scenes. So, if the company that changes money for your bank accepts the currency then they will be able to change it for you no problem.

The story goes, or the way that I was told
There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low
And so he called all the wise men to the hall
And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls
But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring
It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king
Engraved in black, it had no front or back
But there were words around the band that said
Just know: This Too Shall Pass

I have some very bad news for you.

the good news is that the Lev is still legal tender in Bulgaria until 2012.

The BAD news is that you have a pre-1999 bill, after which date the lev was inflation corrected 1000:1

So if you say your bill is worth $350, it now is worth $0.35, approx.
Inflation pwns.

In 1998 the bill bought an ounce of gold:

Which today is worth $1100.

the bill itself however approximately buys a pack of gum now.

Id say hold onto it for novelty value, or once back in the states try to get $5 for it on ebay.

According to my rough approximations, that bill was worth approximately USD2 in 1998...
