attn, ppl with opinions re: Modest Mouse
    #11235739 - 10/12/09 08:35 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

A lot of folk say that Modest Mouse "used to be awesome" but went downhill after year X.

What? What is this nonsense?
Modest Mouse is good, both back in the day AND on what as far as I know is their most recent album, "We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank."

Are there any folk here who hold the above stated opinion?
Can you explain your rationale?

Also acceptable: general discussion RE Modest Mouse.

The style has changed a bit and sounds more produced but I think the old and new are great either way. Just in different aspects. They've also released a couple new singles on the "Satellite Skin" single a few months ago.

Yeah, they're one of many bands that lost a lot of "indie cred" by making some significant changes to their sound. I was never really that in to their music, but throughout high school they were big with my group of friends.

They switched drummers on their major-label breakthrough ("good news for people..."), and that was kind of a bummer. Their old drummer (again, not knowledgeable enough to know their names outside of Isaac Brock) was really unique. He managed to take all of Isaac Brock's weird ideas and make them into listenable sketches, as opposed to straight-up pop songs (which is what I think "good news for people..." is mostly full of).

Isaac doesn't have as much freedom (or maybe just doesn't want) to get as rowdy and hammered as he used to at their shows. The man was awesomely belligerent most of the time. I hear he's toned down a lot. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just one more reason why indie kids will side with the old days as opposed to the new stuff.

Also, there's that whole underground attachment that so many of us are prone to get if we love an amazing band that doesn't have a huge fan base. When they signed to a major and changed their sound, the old fans probably felt simultaneously alienated and crowded. That's how it goes when a good band blows up. Long time listeners lose the ability to identify with the music, because now even Hannah Montana's fans are singing the lyrics you used to hold so dear. It sucks, but it happens.

PS - I admit I haven't given a full listen to their newest album.

I loved "The Moon and Antartica" when I was a kid, but hated everything after "Good News for People who Love Bad News." They became maudlin and sentimental with this album and Isaac Brock's reported use of Prozac. They also had a new record deal, which I think put pressure on the lead songwriters to produce marketable stuff.

There are those who argue that just because it's "marketable" doesn't mean it's "bad", but I hate to see an original and innovative musical group give into what everyone expects of them and produce music that sounds like all their other music (only moreso). There comes a point when a band just runs out of ideas and focuses on selling albums or creating a certain hyper-conventionalized sound.

Something that bothered me about Modest Mouse after about 2004 was a loss of rage and an insistence on harmony rather than dissonance. There are other indie rock bands that have traversed the seas of emo teenage emotions and gone back to childhood in a poetically and musically sound way. For example, The Arcade Fire made that transition beautifully. I think Modest Mouse saw some artistic (or probably commercial) benefit to imitating this style and didn't do it quite as well. Either way, after 2004 the indie scene was flooded with bands that were much more daring, innovative, and original than the drivel Modest Mouse has continued to sell to the teenybopper crowd.

Around the time I became bored with Modest Mouse, I became intrigued by independent pop bands in Scandinavia. Just recently I have gotten really excited about local pop/jazz/rock bands in Austin. If anyone is in the Austin area and knows a good place to listen to some local indie pop, please post! (either performances or bandnames will do)

What are you a TELEPATH!?

spooOOOooky.

:todcasil:

I still have most of the early Modest Mouse on rotation in my musical maker, and Ugly Casanova will always hold a special place in my heart, and in my record collection.
