Opera Error?
    #11024542 -

I have decied that the new version of Opera is better than firefox.  Ive been using it and so far I haven't noticed any problems except with this site (though it might apply to all sites for all I know).

The first thing is that the forum index doesn't always update correctly.  For instance if I go into the Science forum, read a post that someone wrote then go to the main index, the main index will still say that there is a new post in the Science forum (i.e the post I just read).  It seems that for some reason the Opera browser is not updating that page correctly.

Secondly this website is extremely small when I visit it.  I need to zoom in a fair amount just to make it look normal.  I don't remember this happening in firefox as I would rarely need to zoom.

Anyways, maybe its some settings I am using in Opera?

Thanks for the help

Hmmm... you're on Linux, is that correct? I tried to reproduce these problems and didn't have much luck. The appearance of the site is pretty much consistent between Opera and Firefox for me:

The default fonts for the page are Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif in that order, so make sure you have a decent default sans-serif font selected, or try installing the MS core fonts. You could also try different stylesheets and see if there's one which works better than the default. Also Opera 10 is out now so you might want to update and see if that helps (although I doubt it will make any difference).

I think I see what you mean about the forum index not updating correctly, but it only happens if you use the back button, and it's like that in every browser as far as I can tell. If you use a link to go back to the forum index, or reload the page, are the forums updated correctly? There's nothing we can do about that; even if we send 'no-cache, must-revalidate' headers with the page, using the back button will display the cached copy instead of reloading it.

I'm definitely willing to spend the time to make sure the site is compatible across different browsers and operating systems, but I'm not sure either of these problems can be fixed from our end... :undecided:

As for the refreshing thing, heres an example I just checked out

In the forum index I see that there is a new post in the music forum called "Studio Monitors" with a post by "beneath"

So I then click into the Music forum then click into the "Studio Monitors" thread.  After that I scroll to the top and click on community to link to the forum index.

The forum index still shows that the post "Studio Monitors" hasn't been read.  If I click onto the music forum again it will show that the thread has been read which is correct.  If I then click 'community' to go back to the forum index it will still show the thread as not being read.

However to fix that I have to hit the refresh button manually on that page.  Then it will show that the thread has been read.  So it seems like Opera isn't automatically checking for a new version of that page even when I click on 'community'.

Well just to update you, I think the Opera problem was on my end.  I looked into the settings and for some reason it was set to store pages in cache and only update them every 5 minutes.  I guess when I set that I assumed it meant update every 5 minutes or if you visit that page again.  So far it seems to be working properly now, though we'll see.

Thanks for the bump, dunno how I missed your post the first time. Glad the cache thing is sorted out. As far as things appearing larger in Firefox, it looks like you may have inadvertently zoomed in on the front page. Try hitting Ctrl-0 or go to View | Zoom | Reset and it should return to normal.
