You sound like an enormously smug, self important douchebag. Where does this arrogance come from? Did you break a decade-long heroin addiction recently?
QFT.
I agree with the OP, only to the extent that breaking an addiction requires a lot of willpower (especially in the case of a long-term addiction.) And I do think that many people these days seem to lack willpower, to one degree or another.
However, addiction is a pretty complex, and extraordinarily powerful thing. The psychological aspect of an addiction can be nearly impossible to break. This is why relapse rates for drug addicts are so high. Ask someone who's been clean from heroin for 5 years if they're ever still tempted to get high. Assuming they tell the truth, you'll see what I mean.
Anon #7 also has a very good point. When an addiction is physical, it can be VERY difficult to break. OP: Take xanax every day for a few months, then stop cold turkey. You'll find out just how much willpower means, when you go psychotic, or have a seizure.
