so i'm in the aion closed beta..

i never had any intentions of really playing this game or joining the beta. i got an email today saying i got a free access key to my NCsoft account for playing tabula rasa god knows how long ago (what a shitty game). i downloaded the client this morning and tested out all of the new classes.

as far as past MMO's go, i played SWG, WoW, and WAR pretty extensively. this was my first venture into asian MMO territory.

i knew they were going to try and "americanize" this game a little bit to help with the culture shock...but whatever they did, it wasn't enough. the characters still "talk" in japanese, and they have the most god damn annoying voices ever. really the whole sound track was too much, with 'hardcore battle music' queueing whenever you entered combat and an obnoxious (although very high quality) soundtrack. i muted everything after about 10 minutes.

the characters are obscenely over the top cute/androgynous/animeish and i literally laughed for 15 minutes straight playing around with the character sliders. i don't know if it's intentional but you can make you character anywhere from 2ft to 9 ft tall, with completely unrealistic proportions (heads the size of beach balls on miniscule bodies, etc). the actual character designs look like they were done by a gay emo fashion designer, and i ended up choosing a girl because the guys were so flamboyant i couldn't take it. i mean, it you thought final fantasy guys looked bad, this is 10x worse.

as far as gameplay goes, i only leveled to ten, but it is very different from the MMO games i've played before. most notably, the game is build around a CLICK TO MOVE control scheme. you can disable this feature and bind the movement keys to WASD like normal, but even with it disabled, i still had some weird movement issues. double clicking on anything, for instance, causes your character to run to it, even if you have click to move disabled. maybe this is because of the flying later in the game? i don't know.

the whole game is very polished, it's just a completely different format than what most westerners will be used to. there is no way i could get past the character models, so i know i won't be playing this. if you're a JRPG/anime fan you might find this enjoyable though.

How is the PVP? I am currently playing warhammer due to my love of PVP, but the game has some issues. Keeping my eye out for any pvp focused mmorpgs.

even though T4 in WAR has its issues, it seems a lot more robust than aion. you can't level with pvp in aion, it's just one huge gankfest, with level 25-50 all grinding in the same pvp instances.

balance is good between the dps classes, and flight means that the issues between rdps and mdps are pretty negligible. the tank classes and healing classes are too good at their jobs though atm. they can do nearly as much damage as the pure damage classes, while the tanks can take 3-4x more hits than everyone else, and skilled healers can survive just about anything.
