shrooms threw mail
    #10339566 -

I want to hook up a good friend of mine with some mushrooms. Neither of us own a car and don't want to ask for a ride to exchange a small amount of shrooms. He lives 2 hours to 1 1/2 hours away. I was thinking I could just mail them to him because they will go by truck and they only have drug dogs sniffing mail at airports. Does this sound like the mushrooms will make it to his house ok? Has anybody ever sent mushrooms threw mail before? I was planning on using the regular US Postal Service, nothing to fancy.

send them with something else that smells harsh and you shouldn't have a problem truthfully

pack the shrooms in something airtight... then put something like pepper, then something else airtight

then overnight it and it wont have problems

You could probably stuff then in a first class box and be fine. Or, if you want to be paranoid, grind them up with a coffee grinder and gel cap them.

Can you take a bus to his place? The safest bet is to transport them yourself.

If you absolutely positively have to send them then ship it by USPS, UPS/FedEx don't have to have a warrant to search boxes, USPS does.

Shrooms have almost no smell and dried shrooms smell even less than fresh, plus dogs aren't trained to smell shrooms anyway. I'd be safe and go ahead and make it airtight though. Vacuum sealing would be best but double or triple bag it in plastic if you don't have a sealer. I was also told that if you put a smaller box inside the big box then x-rays won't be able to see inside the small one since they are weak, but I doubt they even x-ray unless there's a suspicion.

Best of luck to you, since your friend lives so close the box should only trade a few hands anyway. Your post office -> truck -> friend's post office -> to his house.

Grind them with a coffee grinder, cap them and put the capsules in an eccinacea bottle.

Ship via USPS, first class.  Use a real name/return address, though it doesn't need to be yours.

The most important thing is to make sure its packaged well so there is no chance it could accidentally come open.  Make sure nothing could happen to the address label by covering it with clear packing tape.

Make sure it has enough postage and don't overnight it or do anything else out of the ordinary.

Drug dogs do not smell for mushrooms but if you keep your shrooms near your weed they will smell the weed.

If you follow this advice + the advice below, the chance of getting away with it is 99.92%.

Make sure it fits as few of the drug package criteria as possible.

The Mail, Shipping, and The Law
This will be an ongoing compilation of authority and opinion regarding the shipping of items throught the mail.  This covers US Federal Law.  I'll update if/when I get around for it.  Hopefully those who need this information will do a search and find it.

What classes of mail require a warrant to open?

First Class, Express, and Priority (which is often considered a first class subset) are considered sealed, and require a warrant to open.

Quote:
It has long been held that first-class mail such as letters and sealed packages subject to letter postage - as distinguished from newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, and other printed matter - is free from inspection by postal authorities, except in the manner provided by the Fourth Amendment

See:  UNITED STATES v. VAN LEEUWEN, 397 U.S. 249 (1970)
http://supreme.justia.com/us/397/249/case.html

Quote:
    Matter Closed Against Postal Inspection

Matter closed against postal inspection includes First-Class Mail (including Priority Mail) and Express Mail. The USPS may open mail other than First-Class Mail or Express Mail to determine whether the proper rate of postage is paid. Material wrapped or packaged so that it cannot be examined easily or examined without destruction or serious damage is closed against postal inspection and is charged the appropriate First-Class Mail or Express Mail rate.

SEE: Domestic Mail Manual Section 123.2.3 Link to DMM: http://pe.usps.gov/text/dmm300/DMM300_landing.htm

Authority for DMM's provision:
Quote:
39 USC sec. 3623(d)

    Quote:
The Postal Service shall maintain one or more classes of mail for the transmission of letters sealed against inspection. The rate for each such class shall be uniform throughout the United States, its territories, and possessions. One such class shall provide for the most expeditious handling and transportation afforded mail matter by the Postal Service. No letter of such a class of domestic origin shall be opened except under authority of a search warrant authorized by law, or by an officer or employee of the Postal Service for the sole purpose of determining an address at which the letter can be delivered, or pursuant to the authorization of the addressee.

What is a suspicious package?

While this is probably impossible to define, as the government will likely use any charecteristic to justify its suspicioun regarding a package when pressed in court, I'll try and provide some sources regarding what is considered suspicious both inside and outside the USPS system (including private carriers).

Quote:
Based upon experience and drug-trafficking intelligence, the United States Postal Inspection Service has developed a drug package profile for packages deposited in the Express Mail and Priority Mail. Profile characteristics include: (1) heavy brown paper wrapping; (2)
heavily taped seams; (3) handwritten address label; (4) sent from one individual to another; (5) mailed from a zip code different from the address; and (6) a fictitious address. While it is uncertain whether any one of these criteria, standing alone, would support a finding of reasonable articulable suspicion, in various combinations these criteria might indeed support such a finding.

People v. Shapiro, No. 81920 (10/17/97)

http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?court=il&vol=81920&invol=1

Quote:
The package roused the officers' suspicions because it was
incorrectly addressed even though the sender and recipient had the same last name; the air bill was handwritten, marked "priority overnight," and contained no account number; and the package was sent from California.

USA v. Vasquez; No. 99-3982 (8th Cir.)

When can officers (not private employees of a private shipper) detain a package

Quote:
[l]aw enforcement authorities must possess a reasonable suspicion based on articulable facts that a package contains contraband before they may detain the package for investigation," United States v. Johnson, 171 F.3d 601, 603 (8th Cir. 1999)

Unless your going through a major shipping hub they won't even have dogs. though it has been suggested that the drug dogs used by shipping services are not able to detect mushrooms. Just your normal (coke, meth, opium, MJ, etc..) drugs.

Just send them. They'll arrive just fine. I send shrooms around all the fucking time. As long as it doesn't cross any international borders you're cool. Just put a bogus sender name on the package to make sure.

Its not as hard as it sounds, especially since its such a small distance between the two. You wouldnt even have to do overnight and it would probably still get there fine. And do dogs even detect mushrooms?! Ile bet you could just put um in a ziploc bag and wrap it up and put it in a box with a pair of socks or something and be fine.

Oh and dont put a return address of course. Or put a fake one.

edit: Yeah dude think about it, you could make some tea or something with it and just send him that, or break the mushrooms up so they dont even look like anything.

I dunno just seems like so many ways you could do this. Dont trip its all good.

I used to send shrooms all the time but what I did was vacum seal 4 ounces and put a "gourmet" mushroom sticker on it with nutrition facts and all that bs and I never had a problem. I did this like twice a week for years.

yeah there are no dogs that can smell for shrooms that I ever have heard of they may have them now but 4 years ago they didnt exsist at least.

I even got pulled over with 4 of these 4 ounce packages (1 pound total) and the cop totally checked them out and didnt even ask what the deal was. I travel with them like this with a bag of food that you would eat mushrooms with and I feel pretty confident that any cop that finds it wont know a thing

You should be alright if you seal it well before sending it. I wouldn't recommend this for larger quantities, however.

I've always found throwing shrooms THROUGH the mail to be most difficult.
