Driving a manual transmission while stoned
    #13527916 -

I've driven stoned since I learned how to drive. It's never been a problem for me as I have a high tolerance and know when I am too stoned, and have my girlfriend drive or wait to sober up a little.

That said, I've always driven an automatic and am planning on getting a manual soon. I have only driven a manual a couple of times out in the sand and country roads, never in town. Right now I'm in the process of selling my vehicle and getting a new one and want it to be a manual, for better fuel economy as well as off road performance.

Any opinion on whether it's harder to drive a manual stoned than it is an automatic? I'm thinking it'll just take awhile for me to get the hang of it, and then I'll be comfortable enough.

youll get used to it, and manuals actually make better drivers IMO, you pay attention to everything that is going on because you have to participate more in the driving experience

A stoned manual driver IMO is much safer then a stoned auto driver.

Manual forces you to think while stopping/turning.

Manual drivers as a whole are much better drivers.

I think being stoned while driving, however, negates the extra participation in driving that a manual adds to the experience.

I can hardly drive an auto stoned though, because being stoned on pot turns me into a retard, which is why I don't smoke pot.

I would think that the focus on shifting correctly might take away from the surroundings you should be watching, at least until shifting becomes second nature, which takes a bit of time to get down doing it blazed.

Better hold off until you get the whole coordinated arm-foot action committed to muscle memory or you may end up grinding gears.

Doesn't happen.

I spent 4 years exclusively in an auto, driving commercially (8 hours a day).

Got into a $600 1986 Sigma (manual) when I left my job and was like riding a bike.

You never forget it.

I never understood how common automatics are in the US. Over here we all learn to drive on manuals and nobody owns automatics except old ladies and people who own very expensive cars (and are also generally old).

I couldn't imagine driving a car and not doing all the clutch/ gearstick thing.

The most annoying thing to me is when it's time to buy a new car.  My #1 must-have when car shopping is a manual transmission, and 99% of the cars for sale in the US are auto.  Most US car models aren't even AVAILABLE in a manual!

The fire has many things to teach.
But so does the human experience.. which is like fire, sometimes you just need to stoke the coals and sometimes you just need to add a log or reposition the log matrix. But a well built fire will be much more self-sustaining than a poorly built one, and they all need love to grow. And don't fuck around or your might burn yourself. Must always respect the fire. - Shroomism

all manuals are slightly different though.  Some are damn near impossible to stall, others have no feel so its rather easy.  I bought a manual before I ever drove one and I was able to do the 80 mile drive home starting and stopping on large hills readily.  I did have experience with sequential manuals though, which i guess sorta helped?

this year had a peak of something like 5% manuals on average per car sold

I would think this too.

Coming from someone who can handle his pot.

Having said that, the hardest part is taking off. As long as you get a feel for when you CAN shift (and don't try to redline it every time), you should be OK.

I had to learn to drive manual for a parking job I had a while back. I ended up buying a manual car to learn how on my own.

It took a few days to get used to it without stalling out or otherwise looking like I dont know how to drive my car but after a week it became almost second nature and the longer you drive it the more in tune with driving manual you get. Its a lot of fun! You can control your car so much better than with an automatic it's insane. Whereas in an automatic if you wanted to peel out, just flooring it doesnt always work, especially in weak cars. But with a manual car, no matter how weak your car is you can rev it up to just a little below red line and engage the clutch however you want and accelerate as fast as a really powerful automatic car. Other than that, its just nice to have options, high speed, high gear, low speed, highish gear, low speed low ish gear, just... lots more control.

And now for me sober, I find it to be much more difficult driving an automatic because I feel like im jumping out into the road or not doing enough before I drive. I would never drive anything except manual now under any condition.

Lucky you. Automatics absolutely bore the shit out of me. Plus, there is too much shit to go wrong with an automatic transmission that I don't know about. Manuals are easy, just change the gear oil from time to time and give it a clutch if it needs one.

But I guess having a 5-speed keeps a lot of people from driving my car, which I don't let hardly anyone anyway.

once you can comfortably drive a stick, it will be no different than driving an automatic stoned.

of course with a stick shift you have to get used to switching your gears and all that, but once you get it down it becomes just as second-nature as switching from park to drive.

Its much worse the other way round.
Jump into an automatic after long term manual driving and its
just a matter of time before you stand it on its nose.

I always tuck my left foot away in such situations.

In fact it works the opposite. Whenever I drive my dad's car when I'm home for winter break I never fail to step on the brake with my left foot when I go to turn the car on or shift it into reverse the first one or two times. Grasping at the phantom shifter usually happens too.

This guy knows whats up.

Driving a manual is way more fun imo, and it almost feels like you're the car when driving stoned. With practice it can feel like so much more flow and smoothness than an automatic.
