the new front page (and subsequent subpages) lacks an effective navigation system.

what is missing is the "effective navigation system"

anno's screen shot is different from what i get when i type in shroomery.org

sure skins and customization is cool but
A) it's not apparent when visiting the site that this is possible [hell i don't even know if it is, i'm just guessing so because anno has something different]
B) your average user may not go to the trouble.  if you were visiting a website for the first time would you go clicking around looking to customize it immediately?  i wouldn't.  so perhaps change the default.

or just bring back the actual effective navigation system :smile:

placement isn't that important to me. i think the left is the natural place for a navigation system, but it's not a big deal.

here are the problems i have with it:

A) broad topics. with subcategories combined, things appear simpler, but that adds the number of clicks you have to do to get to information. some people, myself included, will back out of a site if they can't find what they want quickly.

B) yes there are initial links to subsections on the main page in the middle as you say, but that menu doesn't stay with you. so if you want to switch sections, you have to back out. a consistent navigation, be it on the top, on the left, on the right, or wherever, gives the user choices to navigate the site without going back every time.

Registered users can choose their template in the settings, there are some templates that incorporate a menu.

Under "Which template (skin) would you like to use for the main site?" Choose the template Java.

It features a javascript navigational menu, which is still under consturction though.
But It will be finished next week.

Captain Jack has really explained his concerns well.  I share in them. 

If I stumbled onto the new default homepage, I promise you I would not have discovered either the great information or community that the shroomery is.  From the perspective of a long time shroomerite maybe the change is great, but it won't be as effective for drawing new users in.  This is how I feel anyhow.    :laugh:

The current default template is only temporary until some of the people working on different designs are finished.

The JAVA template seems most functional - and I'd suggest that once it's had its bugs worked out, the java menu should be incorporated in all templates accept one specified as "non-java" for users who don't have access to an up-to-date browser... but i don't think that's much of an issue these days :crazy:
