I feel like I remember seeing a tek somewhere for instapot corn around but canโ€™t find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a instapot corn tek lol? I usually use brown rice but I wanna save the rice water for agar because I had amazing growth with rice water and corn syrup. I was going to use that to maybe knock up a jar or two while I wait on the rest of my plates.

The only thing IP changes is 2x time under pressure. Otherwise no different from any popcorn tek. Mine: Simmer til cooked through when crushed with thumb (no dry white interior bit), cold rinse, air/fan dry until it no longer sticks to your hand / soaks a piece of toilet paper (tiny lil specks are fine). load popcorn, leaving room to shake, and slightly loose lids. Foil over lids if your filters aren't waterproof. Elevate jars with IP trivet or lid rings (or foil snakes if desperate). 3hrs on high/regular (4 to be super safe but 3 never did me wrong).

After pcing let the sealing ring dry, also wipe the inner rim of the lid.
Ring gets porous from water.

Alright thank you! I never did that with my old PC and the gasket is about to crack on that thing. I just oiled it up between uses and wondered why it's cracking...

Thanks! Got my corn soaking right now, plan on doing my first agar inoculation with agar. Gonna do two with a tissue transfer that so far has been looking clean and has great growth. The other two I plan on letting sit for a few days til one of my T1s have some growth to drop in or should I just try doing it with the growth I have now instead of letting the corn sit?

What kind of scalpels/hobby knives do you use? I had a cheap set but the blade fastener thingy was plastic and melted when flamed. I bought a full metal one but that thing burns my fingies when I flame it because the handle isn't insulated. I'm thinking about coating the handle with RTV silicone.

Or do you just set it down to cool for a bit before using it?

might be wasteful but I just use sterile blades for each task and never flame the handle. I don't usually get any contamination

I 3D printed some handles. Standard blades will go in them, along with the matching caps. This way I can disinfect several, put the caps on, and put them in the still air box. I mainly use it for transferring agar to agar. That way I can use a new knife for each Petri dish.

Both of the above replies are viable options. To answer your question tho of what I use. I use an exacto metal scalpel that I stole from wal mart. It does get kinda hot after flaming the blade a few times but thatโ€™s alright for now. If you have the money I say go for disposable blades but putting a handle on would be great and possibly make it more comfortable to handle as well

I'm assuming following the logic of relying on other people's pre sterilization by buying disposables would increase contam chances compared to getting a handle and flame sterilizing every time :0

Honestly I feel like 99% of em should be fine and dandy and sterile but I donโ€™t know the process of how they sterilize them but I assume itโ€™s pretty good to be able to be sold that way under the assumption itโ€™s supposed to be sterile. However I guess you might technically be right since if you flame 100% of the time then you can assure that your blade is sterile 100% of the time

I think that logic falls apart when you take into account their sterilization and sealing methods are much more repeatable and secure than using something that's been sitting around dirty, only becoming clean by flame in an unsterile environment, adding carbon to the blade and causes air moving around my still work. I get like 200 blades for 10 bucks on Amazon. whoever makes them has some sort of quality control and does probably a million a day, autoclaved and sealed. again its probably wasteful and costs more than reusing one (maybe? gas cans are expensive and I use a lot of them for work) but I wouldn't advise against using them on the basis of the logic you're using lol

I'm using pftek concepts for this first attempt my question is, what should I use for a fruiting chamber and what type of light or temp or anything do you need while fruiting again first attempt so doesn't have to be professional, I'm just trying to get to the end zone lol thanks. Pic is what I was going to use.

I struggled with corn. I was running a digital pressure canner that the wife already had. Only gets to 240*F, so I was cranking the times up. 150-180 minutes. My corn came out amazing the first two times, but after that, nothing but contam. Didnโ€™t

My notes are nonexistent, so yay for me. Ooof.

I first ran food-grade corn, which worked. Then feed corn which I suspect was too large for full sterilization. Then back to food grade corn.

I no-soaked and ran a much lower cook cycle (rolling boil for 20mins), and then 150m PC cycle, came out dry and zero contam (sat for weeks as a test). Wouldnโ€™t take when inoculated tho.

This time I cooked longer with no soak and PCโ€™d for 180mins and after a week and a half of sitting still no contam. Weโ€™ll see if they take. I travel a LOT in June so theyโ€™ll have plenty of unsupervised time to colonize.

The real solution is a proper PC which I bought this week, just sharing the frustrations I had with corn. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

so I am running a micro grow compared to some of you right now, and didnt wanna drive all the way to the feed store so I grabbed WBS from the store when I was grabbing jars. I also wont use (or have any place to store) an entire 50lb of oats without it going bad or attracting bugs with my timeframe.

just checked the seed I got and it has peanuts and pistachios in it, even though looking at the stuff inside the bag its clearly like 80% millet and Milo. I see very few chunks of what I'd identify as nuts lol. is this gonna work? I've always seen to use the no nut but if I just do a quick cook they should be fine right? if anyone has like a good evidence against it I'll just go buy the oats and store em somewhere out of the way lol

My gut feeling tells me that anything with fats and oils in it can't be too bad, if anything the added grease should make the seeds stick less? But maybe it will have the opposite effect, idk, but id bet it wont

I saw birdseed in the store today and immediately I felt drawn to them, just for nostalgia, havent seen a birdseed grow in a while :typing:
