Thanks again to everyone who has replied--I honestly did not expect this much feedback.

Altered... I was amused when I read your post...because you begin by saying that I just described you, and then you went on to describe some of my own personality traits.  I over-think things to death, and I believe it really interferes with my life. This is a related but somewhat separate issue for me.

I will update as I make progress.

After making this thread, and reading some of the responses, I did start to feel a little better about things.  I have been making an effort to take more interest in people, and I have noticed a small response... a "first alert" if you will.

But I do intend to keep this up, as well as possibly meeting some people online, and putting myself into new and different social situations.

Tonight may help as well.  I'm about to have a "proper trip" for the first time in over a year.  I've encountered Dimitri a few times recently, but that's a bit too short and crazy to pull much out of. I think that the shift of perspective may help me.

My girlfriend and I just dosed, so I'm off for now.  But I will update on my progress, and THANK YOU again, to everyone.

I think that philosophy is key ^^^

Do things because you are scared of them.  Fear falls away in large chunks when you act in spite of it.

I am a recovering shy person.  The biggest leap came when I started to do this: I make a point of having some kind of verbal exchange with every single person in the group of acquaintances I'm out with.  It doesn't have to be deep or profound or even interesting, it just has to be face-to-face time of some kind.  Every single person, every time.  The results are unbelievable.

And it's okay to ask a lame question like "what do you do?"  or "how do you know X?"  You'll soon collect a whole arsenal of better questions anyway.  Some people will clam up and just give one-line responses, but most will be happy that you asked.  Smile when you ask questions, it really makes people feel comfortable opening up.

People will be drawn to you if you have shown an interest in who they are and what they do.  That's the secret to being social.  Be interested in people.

I've also found "So, how do you spend your time?" to be one of the best questions for getting to know someone.  Way better than "What do you do" because a two-word answer won't do.  Once you know one or two topics they like to talk about, you always have a way to start a conversation, or keep one going.

It's really just practice, but a little goes a long way.  Once you start to open up to people, they will start to open up to you, and the whole realm of socialization will not seem so confusing and worrisome.

I also can't recommend How to Win Friends and Influence People enough.  Anyone can learn a lot from that book.

Making the issue worse, I have this sense of social apathy.  Like... this feeling like no one really gives a shit... so why should I even talk?

Sounds like Schizoid personality disorder.  Effects like 1% of the population I think

I just joined here not to long ago and I already feel that this place is full of assholes and faggots. All I ever run into is an insult that is totally random or someone that is almost brain dead.

What happened to the people that liked to trip ballz and question their existence? Now it's just a bunch of people that try to insult you for a good laugh.

I think a lot of this has to do with taking an interest in your own life. Are you depressed at all? What if someone asked YOU chit-chatty questions....would you even enjoy explaining your life? Once you start loving your life you will naturally take an interest in other people's.

Along the same lines, don't just ask questions, IMO...throw out things going on in your life. I've noticed *everybody* does this. Just a simple "so I started the garden the other day," is good enough. Most conversation doesn't need to start at the climax. I used to try and think over how to start a good conversation before starting one with a stranger, but now I've realized that it doesn't matter...If you start talking, it shows interest and trust, therefore even if what you're talking about isn't that interesting, they will try and make a connection (unless they're rude or whatever).

This is big too, for whatever reason, give people shit - they love it. I don't know exactly how teasing someone strengthens a bond, but it does. Maybe it creates tension that you both can laugh about, bringing you together? I dunno...but this is a huge part of friendship, so to the poster that asked about how to make friends with an acquaintance - work on your b.s.ing and teasing skills. You'll probably wind up with a romantic partner as well, if your open to it.

There's a lot of those people in P&S and TPE.  Sounds like you've been touring OTD.

You'll find people like that, but you'll also find a lot of people that you will click with in this on-line community.  When I first posted on this I got hammered by insults and put-downs and some of the forums are especialy prevelant with that,  but weeding through it I've found I enjoy many of the regulars in this community. Where I live I feel a great disconnect with the ultra-religious society and laws that it makes, it's morals and politics.  Like the original poster said, it's hard to connect with people when your into psychadelics and it feels like no one understands or gets that, like being an outlaw, an outcast.  People are so brainwashed and conditoned in negative beliefs towards this that it's a struggle for me not to just go through the motions in society, be cynical and jaded, and isolate myself.  This forum gives me some release, some authenticity to my existence.
