As for run-on sentences and beginning sentences with "and," sometimes you have to make sacrifices in the name of style and go against the MLA grain.

The best advice I ever heard about writing is to write how you talk.  When we talk, we don't have a chance to change the words after we've said them, we just speak whatever's in our mind at
the
time, and if it seems insufficient, or inaccurate, we say something else to try to clarify. Eventually the idea emerges.  Rewriting is where it turns into tight, gorgeous prose. 

Of course, I can dish out this advice but have trouble following it most of the time.  When I write, I second-guess every word I put down, and end up getting nowhere.  I haven't written anything in a
