"Animals see the unobstructed world with their whole eyes. But our eyes, turned back upon themselves, encircle and seek to snare the world, setting traps for freedom."

Nice Hunter is a very literate man. That was a hefty project translating all that. Hunter's own words are trully amazing. Just as Jerry and the rest of the band could play music that manifested the divine , Robert Hunter wrote words that could evoke the same. His gift as a songwriter and poet is down right amazing. I guess I'm heavely biased though, since his words are gospel in my eyes. I never got much into poetry outside of Ginsberg and a few other beat poets, but Hunter's poetry brings me to tears. It cuts straight to the heart.

You took the works right out of my mouth as usual my friend. I couldn't have expressed my own feelings about Hunter any better!

I wonder if there's a tape out there of him reading it. I have heard a couple tapes of him reading poetry and he's very passionate.

I agree, many of Hunters words give me goose bumps!
It makes me believe that some divine power exists when I think that by some chance Hunter met with Garcia!

as a matter of fact, when the book came out in '89 there was a cassette tape that came with it of hunter reading the elegies with tom constanten accompanying him on piano.

Very tasty. I've got to get a copy of that. Hunter's description of the reading sounds very entertaining. Now that I know it's out there I just have to find it. Thanks and enjoy Lou Reed
