Working with bleach, Safety Info
    #8855627 -

Just a heads up guys, I would work with bleach in a vented environment only. This means, A: Bathroom with a GOOD vent (already turned on) and you being careful to avoid any fumes or B: Outside, and still being careful of fumes .

The reasons for this is, well Bleach is NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite for those that need it spelled out). This means that it will react with anything more basic or acidic than itself to form potentially dangerous compounds.

This had slipped my mind until I poured bleach into a jar that a mushroom had started to decompose in (spore print that I had forgotten about > >) and it fizzed like mad.
Proper reaction? Hold breath, run like hell for known fresh air until reaction stops.

Edited: due to mis-information.

I think most people learned this in grade school.

Though most people probably did learn this in grade school its good info for those who were stoned thru gradeschool and forgot all about chorlines shenanigans!

I knew this but never really thought about it.  Sort of like the "Don't sterilize stuff with flames inside your glove box unless you wanna blow up" rule.  What exactly shouldn't you mix bleach with?

for one thing, keep it away from ammonia! fatally toxic chorline gas!

When did you learn to close your eyes when you washed your face with soap or what it taste like when it was shoveled in your mouth for cursing?
You learn this stuff when your young, Unless you had a maid and butler.

bleach is not hydrochloric acid are you kidding me lol?

bleach is sodium hypochlorite at about 6% in a bottle. it is a base not an acid.

now you were right bleach does create chlorine gas, if you mix it with an acid. say if you mix bleach with real hydrochloric acid at about <40% (fuming hydrochloric acid) then you will get chlorine gas. the thing is it doesn't make very much because the bleach is so diluted. now if you pour hydrochloric acid into a gallon of bleach then yes you have a problem but if your using small amounts like you would in sterilization then you wouldn't really have a problem. And that leads us to the other factor, why would you be using acid when your using bleach to sterilize anyways?

so yea bleach=base
hydrochloric acid=acid

and to the op i doubt unless you have a specific reason, that you would have hydrochloric acid at your house.

The problem is that decomposition and contaminates produce unknown* chemicals, this is why you need to be careful and vent the area when decontaminating via bleach.

I should have rinsed it out once with plain water before introducing bleach instead of just dumping out the rotting mushroom.

*At least I don't know them all.

I was taught it was HCl, You learn something new every day.

Either way though, it still dissociates in water and will bind to create Cl2 gas or worse, cyanide gas if given the right conditions.

Thats strange, I always thought that Bleach was NaClO (Sodium Hypochlorate)?  I don't think you should be cleaning with HCl, I remember when I was in high school there were people putting HCl in plastic bottles with a piece of aluminum foil to get them to explode.

dissociating in water would make it safer.

and i wouldn't worry about the stuff that is already there. the amount of chlorine i produced on purpose by mixing fuming HCl and bleach was pretty small and you would know there was chlorine gas before you breathed too much. it has a very distinct smell lol.

i would just say bleach is safe to use. just don't use other cleaning products with bleach like it says on the label though.
