    #3579255 - 01/04/05 12:02 PM (19 years, 3 months ago)

hey all,

ive started taking this "mood enhancer" 3 days ago to increase seritonin levels and lower anxiety.

so far i have to say that i've felt "happier" and more social over the past 2 days than i have i a while.

anyone else take 5-htp?

what are your opinions of it?

I bought a bottle for an upcoming roll I'm doing, but I haven't started taking any yet. I think I'll start tomorrow and then reply to this thread with something more useful in a few days.

I'd like to know more information too. Are there any "side effects" from taking it? Potential for abuse? etc

I recommend not taking more than 300mg.. there's never any need to. If you take too much you can develope serotonin syndrome.. read up on google.

Anyway, I first started taking 5-HTP for insomnia when I found it actually helped me dream after not dreaming for a long time. My recommendation: take 100mg of 5-HTP and ~25mg vitamin b-6 if you want to enhance the dreaming experience.

I have no experience with this for depression but it is a precursor to serotonin which is needed to balance mood, appetite and sleep.

5-htp info

Well, ive taken this supplement for 5 straight days, dosage level = 150 mg (100 mg in the morning 50mg before bed.)

overall i do feel like im in a much better mood, decreases in anxiety and paranoia.
im much less prone to mood swings too.

however, after researching more i realized taht i should start at a lower dose and work my way up to the higher doses i have been currently taking.

side effects for me have included some constipation and (at least for the first 3 days) some mild erectial dysfunction-- which is fine with me as i could stand to take a break from jerking off so much  :smirk:

these side effects may have occured becuase i started with a higher than reccomended dose.

for me I actually noticed increased sleepiness.  I felt much more tired all the time, and didn't notice any mood changes...

I find it increases socialness and positive feelings and raises energy levels alot... when your in an energetic setting you can just keep on going - same goes with conversation.

However, i find these peak effects taper off after a couple weeks of daily ingestions.. Keep the magic?

I took one last night and I had the best most refreshing sleep in a very very long time. And my mood is up a lot today.

Never tried 5-HTP, but can understand boosting seratonin levels to aid with mood elevation... I have been diagnosed as having the lowest levels of seratonin that my local V.A. had ever seen. They put me on Zoloft, which worked a bit, but made me sota ambivalent about everything, plus it really screws with ability to have sex. In the end, I started toking Salvia.. Works great to gkeep depression at bay....... senorsal

Griffonia simplicifolia seed extract is very high in 5-HTP,
Id like to grow this plant in the future, i've heard of seed viability issues though.

Here's some info on it's solubility for those who are interested.

---
Merck 11th Edition (entry 4784 p.771)
Solubility for 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan as follows:

Water at 5 degC =1g/ 100ml
in boiling water =5.5g/ 100ml

in 50% boiling ethanol 2.5g/100ml
---

So we can assume that 100g of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds (1-10% 5-HTP) is best finely ground and extracted in 100ml-200ml* of boiling water and should yield from 1g-10g of 5-HTP (10-100x 100mg doses).

*will probably need a greater volume of water to cover the ground seeds

linked from: this thread @ SAB.

yeah, you can find the stuff at any local pharmacy or vitamin shop...but the selection will be vry small (if you even have a choice between brands)
a quick internet search will give you a variaty of prices and brands to choose from

i pay $10 for 45 pills (50mg each) from the local jewel osco drugstore. i think that price is a little steep (reccomendd daily dosage is 100mg) when compared to some deals ive seen on the internet.

I'd recommend a few tokes of plain Salvia leaf as an aid to depression relief myself... Not to knock 5-HTP or anything but it sure works fer senor!!!------------

I took 5-HTP for a couple of weeks, just to see what it would do. In the end I stopped taking it because it made me spacey and I could not focus on music, philosophy, and similar things.
