Different Methods For Increasing Serotonin

So, I've tried SSRI's. Didn't work. Then I went the natural route and was recommended that I take supplements of B12 and folic acid. Eh, it kind of worked but not exactly what I was looking for.
I'm now thinking about trying 5-HTP. Has anyone used 5-HTP here? Does it work?

I tried it but not long enough to tell if it was working.
I'm currently trying kanna and after 5 days have had NO effects whatsoever.

Natural methods for increasing serotonin include:
*Eating walnuts, which are the best food source of serotonin precursors, and taking evening primrose oil
*Physical activity like yoga, pilates, sex, and walking
*Being outdoors and getting sunlight and fresh air every day.
*Smoking cannabis increases serotonin in the brain greatly, according to some research.
*Herbs: cayenne, basil, lavender, and lemon balm.
I recently looked into this because of my decision to cut back on the amount of 5-HTP I'm taking. You might try Googling "Increase serotonin naturally" or "increase serotonin", which is what I did. There are also supplements like 5-HTP and SAM-e that work very well, better than SSRIs and other scripts for many people.
By the way, I took psychiatric meds for 6 years and all I got from them was a nasty amotivational feeling, fatigue, and a fucked up metabolism which has caused me to gain about 30 lbs. since quitting 6 months ago. Withdrawals are absolute HELL, too.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure to research it thoroughly first; there's only so much information a doctor will offer someone who doesn't ask specific questions. Their main goal is to write that 'script and get that kick back.

Going for a jog or a walk
Meditation is good you can get bursts of seratonin, it can feel even better than taking Extacy
Trance Dancing, let loose to some music

5-htp was too strong for me and 2 days after i got usually into depression. a better 5-htp source is fermented cheese = cheese which ripens with time. dont know what your location is but the best cheese for this i think was Gouda overjaerig from Netherlands. i think it was 48 months old. as alternative i would propose Camembert or these stinky kind of which name is 'olomoucke syrecky'

Give 5-HTP a try at least. It worked very well for me, I don't need to take it anymore. I took it for maybe a couple of weeks and things got sooo much better.

Cool, glad to hear that. I think I might give it a try. Where can you find 5-HTP? Any major pharmacy should have it, right? It isn't some kind of specialty supplement that is hard to obtain, is it?

L-Tryptophan, the precursor of 5-HTP, may be even better. It is generally easier on your stomach and crosses the blood-brain barrier just fine.

Hey. Personally, I get mine from www.swansonvitamins.com but you should be able to find it at a health store and even some grocery stores.

I have tried 5htp about 4 different times. It always seems to make me lethargic, sleepy and sad.

5HTP also made me feel lethargic. But if you want to try it's easiest to find online. I did manage to track it down in a better pharmacy. They kept it behind the counter though, so ask someone for help if you don't see it on the shelves.
What works for best for me is staying active and healthy. I have to agree with whoever mentioned dancing to trance music. Going to a good party with good vibes and dancing all night = better than all the supplements and SSRIs I've ever taken.
Also, I found this during one of my serotonin-related google sessions --
Serotonin enhancing activities (may be combined for best effect):
* rhythmic motions (chewing gum, kneading, suckling, knitting, running) * making love * getting enough sleep * taking melatonin to sleep if needed (melatonin is a seratonin byproduct that may be temporarily low) * being praised by someone you respect * being massaged * moderate physical exercise * drinking St. John's Wort tea or taking it in capsules
Estrogen/oxytocin tuning activities (may be combined for best effect):
* being suckled on * drinking angelica root (dong quai) and/or licorice root tea * having an orgasm * being groomed by someone, especially having the hair groomed * taking DHEA tablets as directed on label of product (DHEA is an estrogen/testosterone precursor)

I know, I know...why the hell should anyone take some voodoo lady seriously, but everything in that little list rings true with my experiences and just plain common sense. The most obvious, basic stuff is so often overlooked sometimes I feel. If that just seems like BS I can probably find some studies to back up some of these claims...which I'm too lazy to do right now :P

the best way is to take 5htp for about a week before you plan on doing stuff and let your body build up and take the b12 with it

Not cool, that's the complete opposite of what it's suppoused to do. How could this have happened?

Well, apparently serotonin makes flies sleepy...
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/44618.php
So maybe it makes some humans sleepy as well. I guess everyone will react differently and you won't know how it will effect you until you try it.

well, i'm one of those odd people when it comes to drugs... pot makes me freak out and trip balls. dexedrine, ritalin and adderall make me super calm and quiet. MDMA makes me fall asleep.
