Anyone ever work night shift (graveyard)

I got an interview coming up Friday for a pretty intense job. Basically working in a surgical setting designing/crafting bone grafts and human donated parts to be used for surgery. The only absolute ass thing is it's fucking night shift. 10pm-6:30am Sunday-Thursday. Now I would honestly jump into this no problem but of course as soon as I start getting flooded with interviews I just got accepted into this medical lab program where I will have 8 hour lab internships every Friday (8am-4pm). which half through 2016 I will actually be placed into an externship where they can take me on as an employee. This is totally opposite of the schedule I'd have to maintain the whole week. I just don't think I can do it. Also the lab program has lots of course work. I'm thinking I would need to just find a job Monday-Thursday. I'm sort of bummed because this job is really good but I honestly don't think I'd survive.
Not to mention everything I have read online about working 3rd shift has been absolutely discouraging. Everything from increased chances of crashing your car, to cancer, to depression, and to not being able to shit normally!?! Add on to that a full work load of medical lab training that lasts a year. fuck..... I seriously don't want to work in the food business anymore but this sounds almost like I'd be signing myself into a mental health facility.
Besides my ranting has anyone working night shifts. Not talking 5am-balh. Talking graveyard shit.

Yeah I mean it makes sense because the sun has a lot to do with biological function. I've had a fucked up sleep schedule for a long time but was never working while this was going on.

Night shift makes you feel like you're dying. A consistent schedule helps, but unless you're a drug addict with no responsibilities or friends, night shifts are horrible. You will have no social life, your free time will be replaced with the necessity for sleep, yet you will always feel tired.
Good luck

That's exactly what I suspected. I've broken it down into this
(Sunday - Thursday) 10pm-6:30am work, 6:30am-2:00pm Free time, 2:00pm-10:00pm sleep
Friday - 8:00am-4:00pm Lab Internship/School
Saturday nothing
I just don't think it will work out. Sadly I have to pass up one of my best job offers yet. The fact I'm starting this program guarantees me job placement as long as I'm in the top of my class which I will be. Pay is substantial once placed. I just don't have income right now and it's highly frustrating watching my savings go down and down and down. It also doesn't help having to relay that I don't work. Not that it matters much because everyone I know is working as servers or bartenders and not doing much.

I Worked from 10 pm to 7 am for three years . It changes ppl. We were not designed tobe nocturnal creatures. I personally think it should be allowed. It fucks with your body your mind and I even believe the spirit. I'd rather be homeless then work nights again.

It sure does change people, in a lot of ways. You never quite get back those default settings on your body clock. Personally after a while I got severely depressed, but I was too exhausted for too long to realize it. Always tired, always. Every week I'd spend up to 3 days awake because I couldn't sleep worth a fuck, even once I fell asleep it was sporadic or short. It was just worse because I have kids but I had to do what I had to do.

Damn it. I know it can't be right but everyone I'm talking to is like dude just do it... I'd love to see them work 40 hours a week then 8 hours in lab on your day off then complete courses as well. I'm so bummed this company is really good. I have no clue why but I've had about 5 interviews in the last month simply by changing the way I email my resume. Instead of attaching the cover letter I just put it in the body and I keep getting bites.
The first 2 weren't trying to hire me to see me leave once I got my lab certification. 1 I blew off because they wanted to pay me 11$/ hour with a bs in biochemistry. total bullshit to even offer that low of a pay and expect your employee to have a bachelors degree. The 2nd I think I just blew the interview I couldn't sleep and failed to answer 2 questions effectively. I literally just had to say idk that's a tough question. the job was 3rd shift as well. Now I got this one and I'm slowly going insane doing these interviews. It's like I'm a robot displaying my abilities but I can't get a single one to work around with me. I guess they would rather hire a slave driver that isn't furthering their education.

Wow that's rough dude. Maybe try a different company? Move if you have too? I'm with you tho 11 an hour for a college degree is beyond bs. I'm a high school drop out and make 15.50 cutting meat.

Yes I have and the effects are real. I'm an insomniac and figured it wouldn't matter much to me. Truth is, it did. Between that and Ambien I was going fucking nuts. It is very difficult to just flip your schedule to something that unnatural. For me, I have to stay on a schedule or I'll get thrown off, so even on my off days, I was still awake all night and sleeping all day. Which meant basically I had no life at all. Couldn't do anything because by the time I was waking up, everything was shutting down.
Living in a city and with a kid in the house, trying to sleep all day is practically impossible. That in combination with going against the natural sleep pattern almost everyone has, basically means that even if you go to bed "early" you're not really getting the rest you need. So you spend almost all night miserable and exhausted. About the time the sun starts coming up, you get second wind, which is about the time you need to be getting sleepy so you can sleep all day.
Sleep deprivation can drive just about anyone psychotic. Working overnights it doesn't happen as fast as someone just not going to sleep for a few days, but it all just keeps adding up.
Overnights fucking suck. Only people who've really done it can fully appreciate just how badly they suck. I've never met anyone personally who adjusted or handled overnights well for extended periods.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

I did a few overnights, but never on a consistent schedule. Garunteed, an overnight would fuck up my sleep schedule for the better part of a week. My manager has been offering $100 cash on top of taking an ON shift, but I still refuse to do them because it fucks up my entire week.
If you are young, do it short term, and stay as consistent as possible, you'll be fine, but you really won't have a life outside of the extremes of polarized work/unproductive leisure as it takes a LOT out of you.
The only reason I'd do it is if it were a lazy job where you could focus on your studies while doing it.

Night-shifts are awesome. I worked 23 till 7 for years without problems. Got my Philosophy Bachelor and Masters whilst working night-shifts
I usually worked five nights in a row and then had a week off though. Try and crash somewhere between 5 and 7 in the morning that helps. Also earplugs and a very dark bedroom or mask for daytime sleeping.
Just take the job man. There is a very big chance everybody will be crashing during the late hours. You can always quit if it doesn't work out. The first ones will be the hardest as your circadian rhythm will still be in place. Once that breaks it becomes easier and you can sleep whenever.

I don't know why all these people are saying humans are not nocturnal creatures blah blah blah. I'm nocturnal as fuck. I've always stayed up all hours of the night and not because I'm an insomniac either.. because I enjoy the peace and quiet and I get my best thinking done and am almost always most productive late late at night. Humans are diverse creatures and capable of many amazing things. Working a night shift wont kill you. You just have to make sure you:
- Still get sunlight and fresh air. - consistent sleep - eat healthy
Basically the same rules apply as if you were working daytime. Except you're not. Flipping your schedule isn't really that hard either. I worked nights for years and flipped to daytime 9-5 or whatever, and flipped back several times. It's harder for me to wake up early in the morning.. much harder. But I've always been that way. I've always been an extreme night owl. I love working at nights. Peace and quiet. I love that I am usually alone or close to it, with just a few people. I love that the daily chaos isn't going on, the 'collective brainwaves' are all shut the fuck up so one can actually think. You just have to make sure you are able to balance it with the rest of your life, some people can't, it's not for everyone.
Fuck even now, at work my shift starts at 4am... I still usually don't go to sleep until 12:30-1am and that's early as fuck for me. But I need at least 2 1/2 -3 hours or I don't function well.
I am half alien though.
But working night shift, in addition to a daytime job and school might kill you from exhaustion. If you do work nights, blackout curtains are an absolute necessity.

Not sure if you read my post but I disagree. There should be more night jobs. Hardly anyone is fucking open in the middle of the night in most places. Food choices limited.

I'm working full time 10pm-6am, and going to school full time where I have to be up from 9am-3pm mon-thurs.
I haven't had any problems adjusting to sleeping during the day. black out curtains, and white noise machine ftw. If I get tired, I just catch an extra nap between classes or between work and class.
I think you should do it Can't you just quit the job down the road after your labs start if it's not working out? Didn't I read that the job starts now, and the lab starts in a few months?

Both of these. Without pure darkness, never found my body recovered properly. Pitch black room was great though.
Used to work 11pm-6am monday to friday while attending my classes during the day. Get out of work, go home, nap three hours, get up, go to class, come home, nap 3 hours, go to work, repeat until Saturday -- sleep for ages then hammer out all course work for the week and repeat.
It's heavy but it is certainly do-able.
Biggest problem with night shift for me was neighbours making noise during the day while I was trying to sleep.

It's scientific fact, if you don't get pitch black or close while you sleep, your quality of sleep suffers greatly. Lucky for me I sleep like a fucking rock so once I'm out... I'm out.. but light sleepers would probably benefit from a white noise generator or fan or something to drown out noise.
