Re: Anyone ever work night shift (graveyard) [Re: Hippocampus]

My biggest concern is the lab being the opposite schedule of the job shift. That means Sunday-Thursday I will be awake during the night time while Friday I will need to be alert and attentive from 8am-4pm. So that's asking me to be switching my clock every Friday>!? Everyone I've talked to doesn't think it's that big of a deal? I think it's a huge deal considering those 8 hours are my entire lab/future training.

I mean it's entirely do-able I just do not fuck up in this school because it's a ticket to a high paying salary. I have yet to even interview for this job coming up but when I talked to the lady on the phone she said they would accommodate me for when I have to do externships (which i find pretty amazing but who knows if shes just an HR person spitting garbage). She explained the night shift bullshit. She also said training was a 6 month long process and they really invest time into their employees. That being said I wouldn't want to just quit.

I haven't interviewed for this place yet. The interview is Friday. My orientation for the lab program is Monday. I would really want to start this school shit before jumping into a full time position with so much dedication.

Yet when I talk to everyone they say "your up all night anyways just do it"... funny too because I just fixed my sleep rhythm.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It's doable. It will fuck with your circadian rhythm some but if you are adaptable you should be ok.
Is it just one day you have to flip like that? One day isn't a big deal. It's on your weekend too.

I never liked night shifts that much but I didn't mind them either.

Definitely can't complain about the traffic though. That was always a major plus when I had to travel an hour + to work. And during day shift it would be 2 hours coming home. But on nights you could get both ways in 45 mins.

Sleep has always been a problem for me. If I don't have much to do I get stuck into the cycle of staying up all night which may sound good for this type of job but not for when I have to do that one switch every Friday. I've kind of figured out that I will have to run off fumes every Friday which wouldn't be good.

I've been reading up on this shit all day and I guess you can never break the schedule or your fucked. Seems a lot of people suffer a lot from this and that's why most companies opt to pay differential of 35% more.

The place isn't really far so traffic isn't much of a concern. It's really just the whole night thing that has me buggin.

this thread is to be continued. It might be a sick joke that I actually get the job that I've dreaded the most but at the same time it's an awesome job. fuck.

I did it for 7 years with different days off every week (never a Friday thru Sunday off) always working weekends and never knowing my neXt weeks schedule until posted 3 days prior.  I had no friends and absolutely no life, on my days off all I wanted to do was sleep.

I was ready to fucking kill myself, I had a young daughter so I had to stick to it and suffer.

After all those years I asked them for a schedule change to a day shift, so they put me on 4pm until 1am,,,, I fucking walked out immediately!!!

Had I not walked that day I wouldn't be where I am now, or I would probably still be there, be dead, or in terrible health as I was doing lots of meth towards the end...

FUCK THAT!!! :mad2:

Yeah my friend circle is pretty solidified. I just wouldn't see anyone much until Friday/Saturday night if I'm even capable of functioning any of those days lmao.

Yeah unless you have a pretty tight knit group of friends that come to your house or whatever, your social life generally goes to shit.. if you care about that sort of thing.
It really just depends how you manage it. You can still maintain a social life somewhat if you manage your sleep properly.
I dunno man, some people just seem to thrive on that schedule. It's definitely not for everyone though.

I've worked odd-ball hours for years.  I think your sleep schedule will adapt quickly enough... It's your social life that is the real question.  If you live in 'normal' suburbia where 95% of the people work 9 to 5 your screwed.  If your in a larger city like Manhattan it can actually be quite nice!

I live in the Suburbs of Phoenix and yes everyone works 9-5's or are servers who work lunch 11-3pm or 6pm-10pm. So I'm officially fucked if I get the job. I'm cool with 2 days of seeing friends. I really don't see many during the weekdays anyways.

I have a feeling this position is a hard one to fill for them because it's such an intense analytical job and everyone must be tired as fuck or unable to adapt.

Its only for about half a year right?

This position requires you to make the crafts non-stop or just when there is an emergency operation or something(I am not entirely clear on what it is you do).

I have worked nights for multiple companies in different settings and everywhere without exception people were getting shut-eye during the night.

Do you take caffeine (coffee, drinks etc)? Try not to during the week, so its extra effective when you need it on friday.

If you accept the job and its un-doable for you, you can always quit. There is no shame in not being able to work nights, some people can (and thrive) some people cant handle it at all

Don't underestimate how weird things get when you work graveyard.

I worked 10 pm - 7 am for almost a year. Your appetite goes haywire, you're tired almost all the time, and you never have time to do shit on your days off.

Having any full time job makes it difficult to spend your free time wisely, it's about 100 times worse for graveyard shift.

I have never heard of a company wanting you to work 3rd shift for every day except for one.

Completely unreasonable. I would never accept a position like that unless I truly had no other option.

Fuck that..

It's not possible to function for half a year like that and still call yourself a sane individual.

The job is crafting donated tissues into allografts for surgical placement. It's not a half year job I'm sure they would like to keep me as long as possible. I meant to say training is 6 months long. The shift I've been offered is full time 40 hours a week 10pm-6:30am so yeah the only reason I am desperate for this is because I haven't had work in a few months and it's driving me nuts.

Interviews Friday. Might not even get the job offer. I'm not going to try that hard either. I can really do without working night shifts and find something day.

I've found the opposite to be true
When you work nights you have all day long to do shit while everyone else is at work. When you get off work is when everything starts opening.
When I worked nights I would usually stay up during the morning hours to get shit done and then go to sleep around ~1-2pm. Worked well for me.

When I work days, shit starts closing the time I get off work. I don't want to have to rush to get shit done.
It's hard as fuck to get anything done when you work a regular day job.. I don't really know what you are talking about. Banks close, post office closes early, DMV... lots of places close before 5. I have to do that shit on my days off.
When I worked nights I could do stuff like that any day of the week. You have all day free to use as you wish. I find it's about 100x easier to get shit done when you work graveyard.

aside from being the complete opposite of the rest of society, I really do prefer working graveyard shifts. Or maybe being the opposite of the rest of society is one of the things I like about it.
Your appetite only goes haywire if you don't eat properly/ get proper sleep. As mentioned blackout curtains are a necessity for sleeping during the day.
But yeah I feel like probably only 10% or less of the population is capable of handling a nigh shift position... as mentioned some people THRIVE on it, but others (most) cannot hang at all it seems.

I hate working day shifts. But that's what I'm stuck with for now. I'm a straight fucking zombie for the first 3-4 hours, this waking up early in the morning shit is for the birds... and I never get used to it.

I also look at it like you are usually wasting 90% of the sunshine daytime during the day.. sitting at work. When the sun is shining and you are sitting in an office or something.
You know what's depressing as fuck? Waking up when it's dark.. and then coming home from work when it's dark, you almost never see the sun except through a window.
nightshift you are just working the night away. You have all day free to divy up between your sleep and free time.
You get off work and the sun is rising, new day. It's a different experience for sure and I can see why lots of people don't like it, but I think it's fucking great.

Yeah. Trust me I've been a night owl practically my entire life. I'm no stranger to stay up late as fuck and sleeping in late. About 2 weeks ago my schedule was absolutely fucked up. sleep around 10am wake up at 5pm. I've only worked 2nd shift and 1st shift before. This whole 3rd shift thing just has me weary.

I've already concluded that I'll go to the interview and see how the job is and place is. If they are really concerned about me then I'm sure they'd be willing to give me a chance later on when they find another pawn to work the vampire shift.

It's just different. You have to adjust to it. Might as well try it if they offer it to you and see how you like it.
I mean what's the worst that can happen? School once a week during the day shouldn't be any problem.
Worst case you can always quit if you absolutely hate it. But who knows you may be one of the few.

Just to see if I understand correctly. You are accepted for this lab trainee thing that is on friday. Mid 2016 this will turn into a fulltime paid internship. You need another job for the time till then. This could possibly be the night thing?
