These subs blued a lot! So i am posting a new picture showing the blueing about an hour after i picked them. I didn't even handel the caps and some of them blued. I am trying to upload my pic, but the uploader isn't working...so as soon as i can, they will be on here. As far as my location goes, just in my patch still, in ohio. It snowed here this morning!! I was so pissed...but it might work as a cold shock, it is going to rain the next few days and go back in the 60's. pics coming soon...

EDIT - pics are working now:

peace

They were puns, sorry,, I have an odd sense of shrumor tonight,, I mean humor tonight...

spread around that substrate= share what it is fruiting from with us, like literally take samples and send them to some cultivation folk, so they can hopefully find out what makes them so potent and bluing. or if thats too much just let us know what it's mixed in with hay, straw, shavings, how old the substrate is. is it severly rotting, in shade or direct sunlight ect...

Wow if only we knew what it was composed of..
. or should I say "composted of:
This is a pun about what the pan subbs are fruiting from.. considering it is outside and occuring naturally I would consider the growth medium to be some sort of compost.... composed and compost, "just word play".

What the???? I have never in my life seen a Panaeolus subbalteatus stain blue like that. I don't think anyone has. I doubt those are really Panaeolus subalteatus. They might be, but I would say they are some other type of active Panaeolus. The zonate pilus means nothing, lots of Panaeolus sport that characteristic, including the florida mystery Pan, though I know thats not what you have, they are something different.

I would defintely take a few caps and dry them well, also take prints. See if maybe Teonan, Mr. mushrooms, workman, or someone with a scope and some skills will put some gill frags under a scope for you. Also send the prints so they can get spore measurements.

Great find! The Panaeolus genus is so poorly divided, there are many species of mushrooms in this genus lumped under one name, like Pn. subbalteatus etc...The genus is overdue for a revision using new genetic technology. You may well have an un-documented Panaeolus.

LK,

Your stems have no reddening, no vertical grooves that I can make out, and no tiny fibrils along them stem or near the apex. The cap is also bleached almost completely white instead of the typical straw yellow a Panaeolus subalteatus fades to.

edit: nevermind, your first set of pics didn't load for me the first time I opened this thread, I was only looking at the second set of pics. I see the features that I didn't see in the other pic, the reddish stem, small fbrils and so on.

does anyone else think it's odd that his mushrooms bruise too blue and he's written on the paper they're laying on with a pen who's ink is the same color of blue?

falseaddiction: are you playing a joke on us?

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I am disappointed you would think that of me! I am true as they come, and i hope you can expect that from me. I did take the picture on a envelope, which did have blue pen, but i didn't change the color of the mushrooms!!!! I would never do anything like this. Hopefully a few more come up and i can get some good prints. the rest i still have dried. If anyone would like more info, pics, or whatever on these just ask for excatly what you need. If i could have found a new active mushroom that would kick ass. But trust me, i just don't do stuff like that...but i know why you would think that with some of these dumb asses on this board. I love studying mushrooms and i want to benifit science, not wasting peoples time. Peace

also, i just saw that ones are found blueing in hawaii. wouldn't those be different, considering the ones i found have been coming up in the temp range of high 55 and lows in the 30's. Just a thought...i could be way off

The pictures you've posted last are interesting. I have never ever seen blueing like that in a subbalteatus, and even a Pan. cyanescens won't blue that much usually.

The characteristics of the mushrooms you've found are similar to subbalteatus, but at the same time much different from your normal specimen. As Lizard King suggested, it would be very interesting if you could get some spore prints to Mr Mushrooms, or Teonan for a further evaluation.

I remember you saying they have been growing in a flower bed or something. Would you mind posting some habitat pictures?!
