No man, Steve "Sweaty-Balls" Ballmer actually said they are going in the direction of Apple.

his own words!

Due to "Market Pressure"

Basically they like the simplified complexity.

maybe slightly tolerable ok on a tablet/touchscreen, but fuck that as a desktop OS. and fuck microsoft for trying to be more like apple.

I hear ya man.

I was really disappointed when I heard that this was going to look like windows media center; then to see how

Said how they were going in the direction of apple.

Wish there was an Open Source operating system like XP or 7 - that could go in it's own path.

And still work with all hardware.

Oh man I fucking lol'd

what i find most disturbing is that i believe that microsoft is requiring all new computers shipped w/ windows 8 to have uefi locked bootloaders, meaning that you'll have to boot into your uefi to disable the lock before installing a different OS... now that in itself is no big deal for a user of average intelligence, but I'm pretty sure that to boot windows 8 you need a signed bootloader... that means, in order to dual boot a different operating system, somebody is paying a royalty to M$ to create a bootloader that will boot Win 8 too.... which challenges the whole notion of free software....  kindah fucked.

I actually kinda liked it on the laptop.  But, there is no driver support yet, so, when I went to install w7 drivers, it either would not finish the shutdown sequence, or it wouldn't get past the startup splash screen.

I like windows 8 a lot so far.    However, I have it running on a touch-screen computer and I'm using it for a specific use.

If I were to be using an OS for productivity (AKA work, coding, email, photo processing, etc whatever) I would be sticking with windows 7.  Besides metro and the "app" interface which works well in this "kitchen" configurating, I can't see it adding much to windows7 for everyday use.

It's great for my kids though.  They just touch the tile and start bashing on the screen to play games or surf the web.  Hopefully this screen can handle the abuse of slimy rough fingers

There's always Linux, but then again, the most popular distro at the moment (Ubuntu) has really gone in the direction of Apple, so that's pretty much disqualified, I guess.

Seriously though, who cares if the same few innovations in user interfaces are adopted by several operating systems? I mean, if they are proven to work well, isn't it just logical?

If anything Windows 8 borrows from iOS, whereas Ubuntu is following OS X.  If they copied Apple's desktop experience I doubt people would be complaining much.

You got a point, although the Ubuntu One desktop seems to be a fusion of both. The sidebar thingy is a bit of a merge of the tiles philosophy that Win8 and iOS. As to the complaining: it's mostly the desktop people complaining currently, as was expected. User experience with Win8 on mobile devices are still scant, so that makes sense. Let's see how things develop.

Hmm? The dock in Unity is really just like OS X, its default position is on the left as opposed to the bottom w/ OS X I guess, but then the menubar is the location for app settings of whatever app is active/highlighted for file/edit/view type settings.. which is very heavily borrowed from OSX.

Anyways, I think the user community of Windows should be able to fill in for Microsoft's oversights, I know they're trying to inhibit people from booting straight to desktop and force people into Metro or w/e but I figure it's just a matter of time before people can have it however they want it... nothing to really worry about... I find the Secure Boot deal the more underhanded aspect of it all.

Granted, but what about the 'start' button in Unity? It opens up a decidedly tile-like window.

Ok, heard, that is a very iOS launchpad like feature... OS X has taken it "back to the mac" with Lion/ML, where you do a 4 finger pinch w/ the trackpad to bring up something quite comparable... OS X doesn't pigeonhole you into using it though and some users may not know it even exists, Spotlight & Finder are still there.

Yeah, I do not know - I hate touch crap - gives it that feeling of "Don't worry, we've put everything you'd need right here" I do not understand how me having a touch screen, with/without a keyboard, and coding/gaming/ etc. etc. is going to be efficient.

How many times do I have to clean my screen a day?

This shit all sounds like a horrible, trend-disaster.
I hope people like this bubble-gum app garbage.

I have never had a use for an apple product EVER over a pc, I also edit video, record music, and use photoshop without a hitch; no use for a tablet, or any care for a smart phone; they've all just seemed like other people who can put together a PC and then patent a case for it; and decide for you what parts of it to use.

Unless of course, you're in a kitchen... or something... I just don't get the whole touch screen thing.

I hate to admit this, but serious computer programmers will never use touch-screens because, well, we're greasy people who like our electronics clean and everything else can be fuck off filthy. It's a stereotype, but that's what happens when you work an 80 hour week.

This... I like to have greasy snacks and fingers that should not be touched against anything.

Sorry to say but touch screen is the way of the future. Its clearly already heading that way with no sign of reverting back. Keyboards will stick around for quite a while for obvious reasons but that doesnt change the fact that this technology is being implemented everywhere.
